Ample Example Joins Ohio’s One Under at The Dragonfly Friday

Boone jamband Ample Example will join forces with Ohio quartet One Under this Friday, February 6, for an evening’s worth of jam-heavy rock at the Dragonfly Theater & Pub in Boone. The show will start at 10:00 p.m.

If you drove by popular hangout and Greek restaurant The Parthenon last fall on Thursday nights and saw hordes of people packed in the parking lot jamming out to live music on the restaurant’s new patio, the band you saw was probably up-and-coming Boone-based quartet Ample Example.

This Friday, Ample Example will team up with Ohio funk-rock outfit One Under for a night of improv-heavy rock at the Dragonfly Theater & Pub. The show will start at 10:00 p.m. and there is a $5 cover.

According to Ample Example bassist David Sentendrey, the band came together in summer 2007 when and keyboard player Sam Saussy began searching online for a drummer in the area. Both players agreed that if they were going to take the time to form a band, it needed to be with talented players willing to make a commitment to the project.

“We really didn’t want to start something that was going to be a waste of our time,” said Sentendrey.

Through Facebook, the band tracked down drummer and percussionist John Harris. Along with founding guitarist Matt Dennis, Sentendrey, Saussy and Harris began exploring their influences, writing songs and jamming together, which soon led to the band’s initial live shows around town. Last year, guitarist Daniel Ponce replaced Dennis, giving the band a new dynamic.

Ample Example wears their many influences on their sleeves. The nimble interplay and funky fusion of rock, jazz, pop and even ‘80s music among the four friends and ASU students relies heavily on the jamband ethos.

“We try to incorporate every style of music we love,” said Sentendrey. “I know it sounds so cliché; that’s what every jamband says. On stage, we try to combine our unique style of songwriting with spontaneous open-ended jamming. Given enough space, we have four musicians that can take a jam somewhere with endless possibilities.”

While the band’s raucous shows at Parthenon, Flipside, Beech Mountain and other venues consist of a mixture of covers and original songs, Sentendrey insists that the band truly comes alive when collaborating on original material.

“As a band, we have to try our best to leave egos at the door. When you’re collaborating on writing songs you have to respect each member’s opinion at all times,” said Sentendrey. “Taking criticism and turning it into something productive is an attribute that every musician needs if they want to be successful.

“Playing in an organized band like Ample has created a number of opportunities I never would have imagined growing up. Not only have I been able to share the same stage with musicians that I have grown up admiring, but I have met a number of people that I can now call friends along the way.”

Formed in early 2005 out of the ashes of nationally known jam outfit Ekoostik Hookah, One Under has quickly become the newest emerging musical force to come out of Ohio. The quartet is comprised of seasoned veterans of the music industry and is forging a sound incorporating elements of roots rock, jazz, progressive rock, Afro-Cuban Latin and pure funk back beat.

One Under and its members have appeared at festivals including Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Sierra Nevada Reggae Festival, Grateful Fest, Tabfest, the Recipe Family Cookout, Harvest Fest, Schwagstock and Sunshine Daydreams.

In addition to the band’s performance at Dragonfly, One Under will perform on Saturday, February 7, at Canyons in Blowing Rock. There is no cover charge and the show will start at 10:00 p.m.
