Now is the Time to Sign Up for This Season’s Bounty!
High Country CSA Offers Shares for 2009 Season
High Country Community Supported Agriculture (HCCSA), a project to connect local people with local farms and food, is now offering shares for this season’s produce. Members will receive a box of 8 to 10 different vegetables each week from June 2 through October 13.
Maverick Farms of Valle Crucis has put the community-supported agriculture model into practice for the past four years, and growers in the High Country are now expanding the successful design. The incorporation of multiple farms provides an even greater variety of produce, while increasing the total capacity for members. During this pilot year, however, HCCSA is offering only 50 shares, so interested folks are encouraged to sign up soon.
For an investment of $500 and participation in educational farm workday events, members will receive an average of 8 pounds of fresh produce each week for 20 weeks, as well as the opportunity to participate directly in the local food and farm economy. By coming to a farm, a major component of CSAs across the nation, community members can experience firsthand the quality of what they eat and observe how food can be grown to meet sustainable standards in our area.
Members will also be able to buy separate fruit and flower shares, as well as place direct orders for meat and eggs from local producers.
For more information, contact Franya Hutchins or Tom Philpott at highcountryCSA@gmail.com or call the Maverick Farms office at 828-963-4656. Organizers encourage people who may be eligible for EBT/SNAP benefits to contact the farm for more information about subsidized shares.
