The exuberant sounds of Latin songs and rhythms will be presented by Sol y Canto in a concert Tuesday, February 10, at 7:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Ashe County Arts Council, the concert takes place at the Family Central Community Room in Jefferson, preceded by a light meal of beans and rice and all the fixin’s.

Sol y Canto is a nationally touring and Boston Music Award-winning Pan-Latin ensemble led by Puerto Rican/Argentine singer and bongo player Rosi Amador and New Mexican guitarist and composer Brian Amador. Featuring Rosi’s crystalline voice, Brian’s lush Spanish guitar and virtuoso musicians from Uruguay, Peru, Panama and Argentina on piano, winds, bass and percussion, the sextet has established a reputation for its quirky original compositions that address matters of the heart and social and global aspiration and for their unique and driving interpretations of contemporary Latin music.

Since 1994, Sol y Canto has performed for audiences at the Kennedy Center, the White House, the California World Music Festival, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Puerto Rico’s Museo de Arte and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their many accolades include Best of Boston for Latin rhythms by Boston Magazine and Outstanding Latin Act at the Boston Music Awards.

“The heart and soul of Sol y Canto’s music is its rich vocal harmonies, sumptuous Spanish guitar and a combination of beautiful ballads and churning rhythms with songs from diverse Latin cultures, each performed with unparalleled depth and enthusiasm,” stated a press release from the Ashe County Arts Council. “The addition of wind, percussion and bass makes for an evening of musical magic for the whole family.”

Ashe County’s JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) students will be included in the concert performing with Rosi and Brian Amador. The meal will begin at 6:00 p.m. and guests are invited to bring a dish to contribute to the dinner. The concert is free.

Family Central is located at 626 Ashe Central School Road in Jefferson. For more information, call 336-846-2787.
