Appalachian Brian Estates, Hardee’s of Boone, Healthy Carolinians and Watauga Red Cross are hosting the annual Heart Breakfast on Friday, February 13, from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. The event will be held at Appalachian Brian Estates, and tickets will be donation based, with a starting suggestion of $6.
This long-held Boone tradition, which has been going on for at least three decades, is an opportunity to do a little something special for your special someone as an early Valentine’s treat. The food will be provided by Hardee’s of Boone and Appalachian Brian Estates. The fare will be everything you’d want in a traditional breakfast, and will also feature a few less common treats.
To make the morning even more special, a $25 sweetheart special is available. Event coordinator and Red Cross Director Sonny Sweet said “For all of you out there who forgot to do something for Valentine’s Day, the sweetheart special is a way to recover. That covers a breakfast for two, roses and a special photo to prove it happened.” Corporations can also reserve a table for their employees to thank them for a job well done and keep up office morale. There will be piano music and singing, organized by County Commissioner Billy Ralph Winkler, on the top of each hour.
ASU Health Promotion students, as well as health department employees, will be present to give health screenings in the areas of blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure to those in attendance.
This event is a good way to spend the morning with your loved one, give money to a much-needed cause, and get yourself up to date on your health statistics.
“There will be a focus on prevention of health risks and how to respond when prevention doesn’t work,” said Sweet. “We will be there to teach that it is possible to eat what you want, as long as it is in moderation. For those sweethearts and employers who buy tickets for people they care about, it will be a celebration of the mountain tradition of taking care of your own and also taking care of yourself.”
Proceeds from the breakfast will be used to educate local citizens about heart-related emergency prevention and preparedness.
