App State Debate Team Hosts Events for Students and Community Members

Angel Food Available at Three Watauga Churches—Orders Due February 16

The Appalachian State University Debate Team is dedicated to critical thinking and open discussion of social and political issues. During the academic year, the team offers opportunities for the public to observe and participate in debate. These public debates are parliamentary style and are student organized and student performed. The service team invites a distinguished community member or faculty to moderate. Student debaters and judges come together to examine various perspectives on a controversial current event. Spirited interaction from audience members is strongly encouraged.

Upcoming debates in Belk Library Room 114 are Monday, February 16, and Wednesday, February 18, at 7:00 p.m.

In addition, the team hosts Socrates Cafés, student-facilitated philosophical discussion groups designed to explore complex questions. Upcoming Socrates Café events are Tuesday, February 17, and Tuesday, February 24, at 6:45 p.m. in Crossroads Café at the Plemmons Student Union on the ASU campus. Community members are encouraged to attend and take part in the discussions.

During the 2007-08 academic year, the American Debate Association awarded the Appalachian state Debate Team tenth place in the nation. The debaters participate in a cross-examination style debate that is policy centered, research focused and highly specialized. Student debaters travel around the nation to participate in collegiate competitions on ten or more occasions each year. More than 200 universities participate in these policy debate tournaments, including Wake Forest, Vanderbilt and the University of Southern California.

For more information about the debates or about the Socrates Café events, contact Mariam Willis at 828-262-7527 or willismr@appstate.edu.
