Boone Service League Accepting Scholarship Applications
Submission Deadline Is February 27
The Boone Service League, a community service organization of local women, is now accepting applications for the annual Boone Service League High School Scholarship(s). This year, Boone Service League will award $2,000 in scholarship money to interested high school seniors planning to pursue an undergraduate degree at a university or college in fall 2009. Applications will be accepted online only and are open to students in Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. Those interested in applying can click to www.booneserviceleague.org and then click the Scholarships tab.
The deadline for all applications is Friday, February 27, and no applications will be accepted after this date. The winners will be contacted the week of March 9. Winners and one guest are invited, but not required, to attend the Boone Service League’s annual Fashion Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, April 4, at the Inn at Crestwood, so members and their guests may express their congratulations and encouragement to the winner(s).
Applicants are required to select one of two prompts and prepare an essay not to exceed 500 words. The Boone Service League suggests that applicants prepare their essay in a word processing program using the word count tool, and then copy and paste the essay into the application. While the content of the essay is the main concern, the evaluators will also look at sentence structure, spelling and grammar.
Boone Service League members are committed to raising funds and using their talents to improve the quality of life for residents of the High Country. Unfortunately, there is never enough money or enough hands to take care of all the needs of which we are aware. We encourage thoughtful and prudent use of the resources entrusted to us by our donors, supporters, and members. We use scholarship funds to encourage young adults to pursue a life of service in their community.
With that information in mind, here are the essay prompts:
1. If you were a member of a service organization and given $5,000 and a team of five members, how would you use these resources to meet a need in the High Country?
2. Describe one service activity in which you participated in the past 12 months. Were you a leader or a follower? How did you obtain the resources you needed and how did a person(s) benefit from you efforts? How were you changed as a result of your efforts?
Applicants will receive a confirmation within 48 hours of the receipt of their applications. If you do not receive a confirmation, contact Shannon Burroughs, Scholarship Committee chair, at shannonburroughs@bellsouth.net.
