Creeksong Farm Offers 2009 CSA

The Thomas Family at Creeksong Farm is offering a community-supported agriculture program for 2009, giving folks a way to directly support a second-generation family farm—and get great food and flowers throughout the season!
Members will receive a bag of top-quality produce, eggs, beef and/or flowers every week from June 2 through October 20. The farm will accommodate vegetarian families by substituting more vegetables for beef and/or eggs.
Creeksong Farm has used organic and sustainable growing practices since the 1970s and continues those farming practices today. Overall, the Thomases grow approximately 150 varieties of vegetables, flowers and herbs on 4 acres of fields, sell eggs from free-range chickens and sell humanely raised beef from Angus steers.
Here’s what members can expect to receive in their weekly bags:
Eggs: Because of the chickens’ seasonal laying cycles, members will probably receive more eggs at the beginning of the summer and fewer eggs as the weather gets hotter. During peak production times, full-share members can expect a dozen eggs most weeks, and half-share members can expect a half-dozen eggs during peak production times, but no eggs as the vegetables start to come in.
Beef: Creeksong Farm beef is vacuum packed and frozen, so more will be included at the beginning of the summer when the farm has fewer vegetables to offer and less as the season progresses. Some weeks during the peak growing season, no beef will be included in the CSA bags. Customers are always welcome to order beef with at least two days’ notice that will be delivered at the market price with the week’s CSA bag.
Vegetables: Available vegetables will vary by month, depending on the point in the growing season, but Creeksong Farm offerings will include the following: cooking greens (Swiss chard, spinach, collards), salad greens (lettuce, arugula, spinach), zucchini, summer squash, spring onions, herbs (parsley, cilantro), beets, radishes, sugar snap peas, green beans, cabbage, broccoli, carrots, cucumbers, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, peppers, eggplant, okra, onions, winter squash and pumpkins.
In addition, the Thomases try to include a recipe featuring that week’s produce, send a newsletter to shareholders to keep them up to date on farm happenings and hold a potluck so shareholders can meet the farm owners and each other and tour the farm.
Oh, and don’t forget the flowers!
Creeksong Farm is offering two share sizes for 2009:
• A full share costs $500 for the 20-week season, and full-share members will receive $25 worth of food each week.
• A half share costs $300 for the 20-week season, and half-share members will receive $15 worth of food each week.
Creeksong Farm does not require work from its shareholders.
Members can pick up their shares at the farm in Creston in Ashe County on Tuesday evenings or at the Cooperative Extension office in Boone.
Returning members who want to reserve a share for 2009 need to send a 50 percent deposit by Sunday, March 1. The remainder of the payment will be due Friday, April 3.
For new members, membership is limited, so contact the farm as soon as possible to reserve your space. All payments are due by Friday, April 3.
Make checks payable to Jeff Thomas and mail them to 2901 W. Brushy Fork Road, Zionville, NC 28698.
