Special Olympics Polar Plunge February 26
The 11th annual Polar Plunge to benefit Watauga County Special Olympics will be held on Thursday, February 26, at ASU’s Duck Pond. The Appalachian State University Police Department, the Boone Police Department, the Blowing Rock Police Department, the Appalachian Regional Health Care System Police Department, the Watauga County Sheriff’s Office and the Watauga County Parks and Recreation Department sponsor the event.
Registration for the plunge starts at 3:00 p.m., and the plunge begins at 4:00.
In the previous 10 years, the Polar Plunge has raised more than $75,000 for Special Olympics. All of the money raised at the Polar Plunge will stay in Watauga County to support local athletes. Last year, 202 hearty souls took the plunge and collected more than $9,000 for Watauga County Special Olympics.
Organizers are asking individuals wishing to take the plunge to donate $25. For groups of five or more who register as a group, the requested donation is $20 per person. Prizes will be awarded for the Most Extreme Costume (male and female) and for the top fundraising group and individual. All plungers will receive a Polar Plunge beach towel.
Anyone interested in taking part in the Polar Plunge or sponsoring a plunger can contact Keron Poteat, Watauga County Special Olympics coordinator, at 828-264-9511 or any of the Watauga County law enforcement agencies involved in sponsoring this event.
