Hastings, Ramos Win Watauga and Avery Spelling Bees
Students Advance to Regionals March 22

Photo courtesy of Watauga County SchoolsAfter two practice rounds and 11 rounds of official competition, Valle Crucis fifth grader Cameron Hastings became the 2009 champion of the Watauga County Schools Spelling Bee on February 18 at the Gragg Education Center in Boone.
Hastings correctly spelled “camouflage” and “terrapin” in the final rounds to win the bee. She won prizes from the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce and now advances to compete in the 69th Annual Winston-Salem Journal Regional Spelling Bee in Winston-Salem on Sunday, March 22.
The other individual school winners participating in the Watauga County Spelling Bee included fourth grader Carey Harrell of Bethel, eighth grader Emily Hinshaw of Blowing Rock, eighth grader Keirsten Henson of Cove Creek, eighth grader Ian Hawkins of Green Valley, sixth grader Philip Goetz of Hardin Park, fourth grader Jacob Holmes of Mabel, and seventh grader Dylan Kahle of Parkway. Each school champion advanced to the countywide spelling bee after winning in competition with classroom winners at their schools.
On February 4, Avery Middle School eighth grader Serina Ramos became the champion of the Avery County Schools 31st Annual Spelling Bee by correctly spelling “rouge” and “algebra.” She took home $50 and will represent Avery County in the Regional Spelling Bee in Winston-Salem on March 22.
