Hayes School of Music This Week

This Thursday, February 26, through next Thursday, March 5, is your last chance to catch a great Hayes School of Music concert before Appalachian State University takes a week off for spring break. Enjoy concerts by the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra, featuring the 2008 winners of the prestigious concerto-aria competition; a faculty horn and strings recital; and Quintessential!, a graduate vocal quintet.

Student Saxophone Recital Thursday
Hannah Eckerd, a junior music performance major in the Hayes School of Music, performs a saxophone recital on Thursday, February 26, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Winners of the Hayes School of Music concerto-aria competition and the Appalachian Symphony Orchestra will perform Thursday, February 26. The performance begins at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
This year’s competition winners are pianists P.J. Heebner and Lindsay Loper and marimba player Bobby Fish.
Heebner will perform the first movement from Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, op. 18. Loper will perform the second movement from Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, op. 21. Fish will perform two movements from Emmanuel Séjourné’s Concerto for Marimba and Strings.
The symphony orchestra will perform two movements from Camille Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No 3 in C minor, op. 78.
James Allen Anderson directs the symphony.
Heebner, a junior music performance and computer science major, is from Hendersonville. Loper is a sophomore majoring in vocal and piano performance. She is a native of Orlando, Fla. Fish is a graduate student majoring in percussion performance. He has traveled to Japan to study and conduct research on Taiko music and is completing a research thesis to supplement his performance degree.
The annual concerto-aria competition gives advanced performers in the Hayes School of Music the opportunity to perform featured solos.
Student Piano Recital Sunday
Junior music performance major Hannah Price will present a piano recital on Sunday, March 1, at 2:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Student Bassoon Recital
On Sunday, March 1, junior music education major Kelly Frost will perform a recital on the bassoon at 4:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Student Oboe Recital Sunday
Adam Mouser, a senior music education major, presents an oboe recital on Sunday, March 1, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Graduate Voice Recital Sunday
Graduate performance student Tyler Young performs a voice recital in the Recital Hall on Sunday, March 1, at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Horn and Strings Faculty Recital March 3
The Hayes School of Music Faculty Recital Series presents “An Evening of Music for Horn and Strings” on Tuesday, March 3, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.
The recital features Karen L. Robertson and Katherine Smith, both on horn; Nancy Bargerstock, violin; Janet Bloom, violin; Eric Koontz, viola; Joseph Driggars, viola; and Ken Lurie, cello.
The program is comprised of Haydn’s “Divertimento a tré,” Mozart’s “Horn Quintet in E flat, K. 407” and Beethoven’s “Sextuor, Op. 81b.”
Vocal Quintet Quintessential! March 5
Quintessential!, the graduate vocal quintet in the Hayes School of Music, will perform Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock. Admission is $5.
This is the quintet’s first public concert since it formed in August 2008. The group also will perform at the Mid-Atlantic Regional National Association of Teachers of Singing spring conference in April.
The concert includes solos, duets, trios, quartets and a quintet. The group will perform works by Haydn, Brahms, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Strauss, Puccini and Mozart.
Members of the quintet are Lauren Hayworth and Tara Nixon, both sopranos; Ashley Hollar, mezzo-soprano; Tyler Young, tenor; and Harrison Bumgardner, baritone.
Pianists Aaron Ames and Susan Slingland will accompany the singers.
Each of the quintet members has received a graduate assistantship and the opportunity to perform extensively on and off campus, both within the community and in the surrounding region. Weekly vocal and dramatic coaching is included in their program of study, as well as a concentration on languages and professional career development.
Student Violin Recital March 5
Junior music education major Josh Edwards will perform a violin recital on Thursday, March 5, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.
