MEISA Hosts 2nd Annual Singer-Songwriter Contest at I.G. Greer Sunday
In only its second year of existence, the Music and Entertainment Industry Students Association’s (MEISA) singer-songwriter contest known as MEISA Unplugged has attracted more than two dozen tunesmiths. This Sunday, March 1, the 10 best songwriters chosen by members of MEISA will take the stage at the I.G. Greer Theater’s downstairs performance space in hopes of being crowned the winner.
MEISA Unplugged will begin at 7:00 p.m. and is open to the public. The cover charge is $2.
According to MEISA President Dan Millice, the group auditioned 30 songwriters during the contest’s preliminary stage, judging each musician based on an array of criteria including lyrics, stage presence and overall performance.
“It was really hard to narrow it down to 10,” said Millice. “There are just so many talented people [at ASU].”
Millice said the winner will walk away with free time in the recording studio at ASU, as well as invaluable publicity and experience.
“We want to set it up to where we give these artists the publicity around town they need, some free studio time to record their songs and hopefully some radio play on WASU,” said Millice.
Last year’s winner was talented local star Mike Alvarado. In recent months, Alvarado has attracted large crowds at performances at the Dragonfly Theater & Pub and Legends.
