Two WHS Athletes To Compete in Indoor Track Nationals

Students Need Public’s Help To Afford Trip

Taylor Cook, pole vault

The Watauga High School Indoor Track team will send two female athletes to compete in the Nike Indoor Nationals Friday to Sunday, March 13 to 15, in Boston. Taylor Cook will compete in the pole vault, and Kasey Jones will race in the 60-meter hurdles.

The WHS Women’s Indoor Track team has 10 athletes (the men’s team has 14) and is coached by Daniel Isaacs and Kevin Shaw. Jones, Cook and their teammates have much to be proud of this season. At the state meet on February 14, both of these young ladies finished 2nd in their respective events. Their efforts helped propel the WHS Women’s Indoor Track team to an overall 7th place in the meet—the highest placing for the women’s team since becoming the state champions in 1997.

These athletes are not new to success. Cook is a senior at WHS this year, and aside from being the 2009 indoor state runner-up in pole vault, she has also taken the titles of 2008 pole vault outdoor state champion, outdoor regional champion and conference champion. Jones is currently a sophomore and was runner-up for the 55-meter hurdles at the 2009 indoor state meet. She was also outdoor conference champion in the 100-meter hurdles in 2008. This will be the fourth trip to the indoor nationals for Cook and the first for Jones.

Cook and Jones hope to travel along with their coaches to Boston for the Nike Indoor Track and Field Championship. Such a trip will not be cheap, however, and the team is looking to fundraise to help send the athletes and their coaches up north.

“We are trying to raise money to defer the costs for two athletes as well as two coaches,” said Isaacs. “The booster club does set aside some funds, and I save some from my school budget, but it does not cover all the costs.” The money will cover travel, hotel and meals for the athletes and coaches.

To help send these two student-athletes to the national championship, make donations out to WHS Booster Club/Indoor Track and send to Watauga High School, C/O Indoor Track, 400 High School Drive, Boone, NC 28607.
