Appalachian Women’s Fund and Local Salon Pay It Forward
Changes Salon Owner Shannon Workman and employees Charlene Briggs, Piper Woodring, Crystal Lusk-Townsend and Mary Kay Consultant Ellen Lipscomb, donated their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of local women who, like so many, are struggling to keep afloat.
Did you know that in tough economic times there is one industry that still thrives?
That industry is all things to do with cosmetic beauty. That’s how important and deep the connection between a woman’s appearance and her state-of-mind are.
On Saturday February 28, the Appalachian Women’s Fund, Changes Salon and Mary Kay sponsored a makeover event for four female clients from WAMY and the Hunger & Health Coalition (HHC).
HHC Director Compton Fortuna and WAMY’s Case Manager, Colleen Bare chose the clients. The single mothers were treated to new haircuts, manicures and make-up at Changes Salon.
Salon Owner Shannon Workman and employees Charlene Briggs, Piper Woodring, Crystal Lusk-Townsend and Mary Kay Consultant Ellen Lipscomb, donated their time and talents to make a difference in the lives of these women who, like so many, struggle to keep afloat.
Workman sees how everyone benefits by looking and feeling their best.
“When women look good, they feel good. Everything becomes more positive in their lives when they get the boost they need” said Workman.
Fortuna could not agree more.
“These are single moms who devote all their time and strength to their children. At days end, there is nothing left for them. This event tells each woman that they are worthwhile and valued because someone has put them first,” said Fortuna.
“Empowering” is how Colleen Bare sees the transformation from start to finish.
“Spring is around the corner and this event is a renewal for these ladies. They could never do this without the help of the Appalachian Women’s Fund and the beauty care providers,” said Bare.
Susan Geldmeier, Appalachian Women’s fund board member, was the event co-coordinator.
“When women take care of each other, not only are families stronger but the community is stronger as well” said Geldmeier.
