Dr. Elliot Engel To Deliver Wine Lecture at Ashe Arts Center March 12

On Thursday, March 12, Dr. Elliot Engel will lecture on the history and mystery of wine at the Ashe Arts Center. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students.

On Thursday, March 12, sought after lecturer Dr. Elliot Engel will travel to the Ashe County Arts Center to deliver a delightfully humorous and informative lecture on the history of wine. The lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Engel traces the phenomenal ancient origins of wine and continues the story through the wide and often wild popularity of wine today. Special attention is given to the competing drinks, which almost destroyed wine’s popularity in the 17th-century, and to the unexpected consequences of the Muslim prohibition of all spirits beginning in 700 A.D.

Originally from Indianapolis, Ind., Dr. Elliot Engel now resides in Raleigh where he teaches courses at North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. Engel earned his M.A. and Ph.D. as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow at UCLA. While at UCLA, he won the university’s Outstanding Teacher Award. In addition for his scholarship and teaching, he has received North Carolina’s Adult Education Award, North Carolina State’s Distinguished Outreach Professorship and the Victorian Society Award of Merit.

Delivering more than 250 lectures a year covering more than 50 literary topics, Engel speaks to a wide variety of audiences ranging from 1,200 people at a Town Hall to a classroom of a handful of eager elementary school students. Past audiences have included the Michigan State University Alumni Group, the International Conference of C.E.O.s in Scotland, Princeton Friends of the Library and the Orthopedic Surgeons Association in Boston.

The Wisconsin Bookwatch had this to say about Engel’s lectures; “Professor Elliot Engel is quite possibly the most insightful, personable and entertaining academic lecturer to come out of academia in the last 50 years. His witty, engaging speaking style imparts hard, factual information while leaving his audiences virtually spellbound punctuated by periods of laughter and flashes of insight.”

In addition to his busy lecture schedule, Engel has published seven books, both in England and the United States. The most recent, A Dab of Dickens & A Touch of Twain, was released by Simon & Schuster in late 2002. His articles have appeared in national publications including Newsweek.

Professor Engel has written three plays, which have been produced during the last five years. PBS Television stations around the country aired Professor Engel’s mini-lecture series on his favorite author and literary hero, Charles Dickens.

Tickets to Engel’s upcoming lecture at the Ashe Arts Center are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the show. For more information, call 336-846-2787 or click to www.ashecountyarts.org.
