From Arugula to Zucchini: Bask in the Bounty of the Watauga Farmer’s Market

Mark your calendars and bring a shopping basket to the Watauga Farmers’ Market on Saturday, May 2, for the first market of the 2009 season. Lasting for 26 weeks on every Saturday from the first Saturday in May to the last Saturday in October, with 2 special holiday markets in November, the Watauga Farmers’ Market is home to local vendors selling everything from baked bread and vine-ripened produce, fresh seasonal fruits and berries, jellies, jams, mustard, honey, herbs herbal products, fresh flowers, breads, cakes, eggs and farm-based crafts. Each week, the market is located in the parking lot of Horn of the West.
According to USDA reports, there were 4,685 organized, local markets across the country in 2008—300 more than in 2006. Farmers’ markets are way to connect with community and food while giving financial support to neighbors and friends.
Looking at an economy made brittle by being out-sourced and disconnected, farmers’ markets are chance to show appreciation by direct support of goods being made within the local community.
Started in 1973, the Watauga Farmers’ Market is more than fresh produce and baked goods; it is celebration of connection of land and skills to the table and home. With a wide variety of tasty, local sweets and savories, produce and products, the market is interested in new vendors from Watauga, Wilkes, Ashe, Avery and Caldwell counties as well as from Johnson County, Tenn.
If residents are interested in selling at the Watauga Farmers’ Market, contact Karen Bauman at 828-355-4918 at least one week prior to the weekend you are interested in selling at, or attend the work day for this season’s market on Saturday, April 25, at the parking lot of Horn of the West at 9:00 a.m.
