Spring Sports and Summer Camps Enrolling Now

Don’t wait for blooming flowers and green trees to start thinking about summer camps—the time to register for summer camps and spring sports is NOW.
Registration for spring sports is about to wrap up and registration for various summer camps has already begun or will begin in the next few weeks. Many of these programs fill up fast.

To help parents, kids and teens browse their camp options, we’ve divided the programs into three categories—sports, outdoors and summer learning. From field hockey to theatre to math to outdoor adventures, there’s bound to be a summer camp taking place in the High Country that will interest your child.


SPORTS

T-Ball and Coach Pitch Baseball
April to mid-June

T-Ball is co-ed for ages 5 and 6, Coach Pitch Baseball is co-ed for ages 7 and 8 and Coach Pitch Softball is for girls ages 7 and 8. In both leagues, players learn the basics and fundamentals of baseball, and a reduced risk factor ball is used. The season runs approximately 8 to 10 weeks. Teams meet three times per week for practices and games. No score is kept. When able, teams are formed by geographical location.

The registration fee is $33 per child, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.


Major II Little League Baseball

April to mid-June

Major II Little League Baseball is the first level of player pitch baseball and is for children who are ages 9 and 10 as of April 30, 2009. Players learn and develop the fundamentals of baseball. This is the first level of competitive play in which score is kept. The program runs approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Teams meet four times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players. At the end of the season, All-Star teams are formed.

The registration fee is $55, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 20.


Jr. League Baseball

April to mid-June

Jr. League Baseball is for children who are ages 13 to 15 as of April 30, 2009.

In this league, the fundamentals of baseball continue to be developed, competition is established, team skills are developed and sportsmanship is stressed. The season runs approximately 6 to 8 weeks. All-Star teams are formed at the end of the season. Teams meet four times each week for practices and games. Placement drills are required for all players.

The registration fee is $55, and all participants must be registered by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 24.

Junior Tennis Team
June through August

The Junior Tennis Team program is for children ages 7 to 15 and begins the week of June 1 or the day after school is out. Four levels of lessons are offered: true beginner (first year player), beginner (second/third year player), intermediate and advanced. The beginners start with learning and then mastering the basics of tennis. The intermediate and advanced players are taught strokes and strategies. This program allows children to advance at their own pace. Practices will be held at the Recreation Complex tennis courts every Monday, Wednesday and Friday through July 31.

In addition to lessons and practices, tennis matches for advanced players are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the season. Registration will continue to be accepted throughout the Junior Tennis Team Season. The registration fee is $80 per child.


Soccer Camp for Boys

ASU Conferences and Institutes sponsors two junior and two senior camps for boys. Junior camps are designed to teach young players the fundamentals of soccer. Senior camps are designed to give players who would like to play in college the education to progress their game toward that goal.

The Junior Half-Day Camp is Saturday through Tuesday, June 13 to 16, and the Junior Full-Day Camp is Saturday through Tuesday, July 11 to 14. Both are available to boys ages 9 to 13. The Senior 100 Camp, limited to 100 campers, is Tuesday through Saturday, June 16 to 20, and the Team and Individuals Boys Soccer Senior Camp is Tuesday through Saturday, July 14 to 18, for boys ages 14 and up. A special Easter Clinic for boys and girls ages 8 through 12 is available Monday to Friday, April 13 to 17, from 8:30 a.m. until noon for $195 a player. Space is available for the first 80 kids who sign up. 


Field Hockey Camp

July 8 to 11

Appalachian Field Hockey Camps are dedicated to providing each camper with quality field hockey coaching and a fun overall experience. Sponsored by ASU Conferences & Institutes, this camp is available to rising 7th graders through rising college freshmen. Groups will be divided according to age and ability levels. Both teams and individuals are welcome to sign up. To apply for the team rate, you must have 10 or more players.


Extreme Dance Camp

July 13 to 17

A dance camp for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels ages 5 to 15. Children must have completed kindergarten and be rising 1st through 9th graders. Classes include clogging, cheering and hip hop. The camp is open from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17. Cost of the camp is $100. Extended care until 5:30 p.m. is provided at an additional cost of $25.


Girls’ Soccer Camp

The Girls’ Soccer Camp takes place on the ASU campus. Campers are housed in the same dormitories used by ASU students and are under the direction of ASU Women’s Soccer head coach Ben Popoola. A week of competitive soccer camp is available for students ages 9 through 18. Residential cost of the camp is $485, and cost for full day participation is $350. Spaces are filled on a first come, first serve basis.


Super Skills Baseball Academy

July 19 to 22

Drills, videotape review, lecture and simulated and live game situations will be utilized to help enhance the camper’s learning experience. The Super Skills Baseball Academy, sponsored by ASU Conferences & Institutes, has limited enrollment to ensure personal attention in each and every aspect of the game.


OUTDOORS

Blowing Rock Summer Day Camp
June 8 or 15 to July 31

Blowing Rock Parks and Recreation believes that Summer Day Camp programming should emphasize learning to appreciate the outdoors and environment and that campers should be out in and a part of that environment as much as possible.

Activities for rising 1st through 7th graders include one field trip a week, swimming, hiking, outdoor games and arts and crafts. The scheduled activities begin around 9:00 a.m. and finish around 4:00 or 4:30 p.m., but the facility is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. 

Registration has already started for Blowing Rock taxpayers and is $40 a week for 1st and 2nd graders and $50 a week for 3rd through 7th graders. Open registration begins Monday, March 23, and is $95 a week for 1st and 2nd graders and $110 a week for 3rd through 7th graders. The price includes two snacks a day. Parents must provide lunch for the campers. The camp is limited to 20 campers per age group with a total of 60 kids per week.


Camp Rainbow

Camp Rainbow is a weekly camp for girls and boys sponsored by the Eastern Star Chapters of NC and located in Foscoe. The camp features four weekly sessions for girls and a one week session for boys, ages 9 to 17. Activities include going to Tweetsie, gem mining, swimming, playing putt-putt, crafts and an Outward Bound certified ropes course.

Cost is $240 a week, with the option of being sponsored. The fee includes three hot meals a day, plus snacks. Registration has already started. 


Camp UREC

ASU University Recreation offers High Country children a safe, instructional environment where they can explore a variety of fitness, sports and outdoor activities during the summer months. The ratio of counselors to campers is 1:10, and activities can include swimming, hiking, the climbing wall, soccer, tennis, fitness classes and traditional camp activities such as arts and crafts and songs.

Located on the ASU campus, Camp UREC is open to rising 1st through 8th graders Monday through Friday. Registration begins Wednesday, April 1, and continues through the entire summer. Click to the website for cost information. Discounts are available for multi-week signups.


Mountain Quest Summer Camp ‘09

Mountain Quest’s Summer Camp is a weeklong day camp held at the Blowing Rock Conference Center. Daily activities include a team building/challenge course using a climbing wall, outdoor activities designed to develop and test survival skills, cooperative games and sports, arts and crafts and swimming. The camp will run Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and is offered to children ages 9 to 12. The first of four sessions begins Monday, June 8, and the last one begins Monday, August 3.

Earth Quest

Earth Quest is designed by Mountain Quest as a gentle way to camp in the woods. Camp out in the Blue Ridge Mountains, hike along the many mountain trails, play in the streams, share stories and music around the campfire, learn bush craft and experience nature in a whole new way. Don’t worry; this is not a grueling “survival” camp. This is an opportunity to learn basic camping skills, as well as hike, play outdoors and live in a community—all in a fun safe way.

The camp is open to 9- to 12-year-olds in four weekly sessions. The first session begins Monday, June 29, and the last one begins Monday, August 10. Enrollment is limited to 15 people per camp. Summer Adventure Camp

The Watauga County Parks and Recreation Summer Adventure Camp will be held at Watauga High School weekly from Monday, June 15, through Friday, July 31. The camp is open to children ages 5 to 13, or rising 1st through 7th graders. 

The camp runs from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Each week of the camp has a different theme, and campers can pick and choose which weeks they wish to attend. The cost is $85 a week with extra field trip fees some weeks. Half of the cost is due at registration and the total cost must be paid one week before camp begins. Registration has already started, so sign up soon.


Fun in the Sun Camp

Fun in the Sun is a camp at Hardin Park Elementary School open to ages 5 to 13, or rising 1st through 7th graders. The camp runs daily from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday, June 8 or 15 (depending on when school lets out), through Friday, July 24.

The camp includes swimming once a week and physical activity and art on a daily basis. Campers have access to the gym and playground. Children are divided into the Rugrats, ages 5 to 7; Jetsons, ages 8 to 9; and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, ages 10 to 13. 

Cost is $75 per week with extra fees some weeks. Half of the cost is due at registration and all fees must be paid one week before the camp session begins. Registration has already started. 


Western Youth Network Summer Day Camps

Watauga County’s Western Youth Network will host five weeks of outdoor day camps that will last daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The camps are open to rising 6th through 9th graders and will heavily center around experiential learning in an outdoor setting designed to strengthen self awareness, leadership and social skills. 
WYN’s Summer Day Camps will take place Monday to Thursday, from June 15 to July 23. Campers can sign up for as little as one week or for all five sessions. Transportation will be provided for those who qualify for assistance. Slots are available on a first come, first serve basis.


Camp Ginger Cascades

Camp Ginger Cascades is the award-winning camp for the Girl Scouts of Catawba Valley. Located in the Brushy Mountains outside of Lenoir, Ginger Cascades will offer 45 different sessions in June and July for girls—Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts alike—who will be in grades 2 through 12 in the fall.

The mission of Camp Ginger Cascades is to inspire each girl to reach her full potential. An opportunity is provided for every girl to learn about herself, gain independence and to care for the world around her. Activities include canoeing, swimming, cooking out, making crafts, scaling the climbing wall, sports, games and skits.

Sessions are either three or six days each. The first session begins Sunday, June 21, and the last one starts Sunday, July 26. Camperships, or partial financial grants, are available and grant applications are due by Wednesday, April 1. Registration is accepted online or by walk-in and the deadline is four weeks before the beginning of each session.

An Open House will be held at the camp on Sunday, April 5, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.


Avery County 4-H Summer WOW

The Avery County 4-H is again offering its Summer WOW Program for the 2009 season. Children ages 5 to 13 can participate in Summer WOW, or Wonderful Opportunities Waiting, throughout the summer. 

Participants choose four activities a day, which could include field trips, jewelry making, swimming, fishing, cooking or a fiesta day. Newland Elementary School will serve as the host site and will offer transportation from many of the community schools at no additional cost. The school will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with activities beginning around 9:00 a.m. 

Cost is $25 a day and includes breakfast, lunch and a snack. 4-H is licensed through the state, so subsidy scholarships are available. Programs fill up fast, so be sure to register early. Registration begins Wednesday, April 1. 


Watauga County 4-H Camp

Watauga County 4-H will escort a group of 8- to 14-year-old campers to the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center. The center is located above Greensboro in Rockingham County, near Reidsville.  

The camping week is Sunday through Friday, June 28 to July 3. Camping slots are still available and you can make a reservation now with a deposit of $100. The balance of the camp fee—$360—will be due in June. The fee covers meals, lodging, t-shirt, transportation to camp and more. Activities include canoeing, horseback riding, swimming, archery, climbing, arts and crafts and nature exploration.


SUMMER LEARNING

Anatomy & Physiology Camp

Sponsored by ASU Conference & Institutes, this camp enables 9th through 12th grade students to better understand human anatomy and physiology by engaging in a variety of unique, in-depth, hands-on experiments, labs and assessments.

The weeklong camp has four sessions: Sunday to Friday, June 7 to 12, and Sunday to Friday, June 14 to 19, for the all girls camp; Sunday to Friday, June 21 to 26, for the all guys camp; and Sunday to Friday, July 5 to 10, for the girls and guys camp. The cost is $980 with a 10 percent discount for registering before March 24. The camp fee covers class/lab time, the anatomy and physiology camp manual, all lab materials, supplemental materials, room and meals. Limited space is available, so sign up soon.


Camp Broadstone Weeklong Summer Day Camps

The Day Camp Program at Camp Broadstone provides an option for working parents who want their academically gifted children to get something out of their leisure summer hours. Six themed weeklong day camp sessions will be offered this summer for current 3rd through 6th grade students. The first session will begin Monday, June 15, and the last one starts Monday, July 27. 

A maximum of 24 campers will be enrolled in each week’s day camp and the cost is $250 per week. Because every week will have a different theme, students do not run the risk of losing interest by participating in numerous day camps. The camp will run from 8:15 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. 

Students must meet at least one of the following criteria to be counted as academically gifted: have an IQ of 120 or higher according to a standardized intelligence test, score in the 90th percentile or higher on an end-of-grade test or have been enrolled in Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Limited scholarship funds are available.


Camp Broadstone Residential Summer Camps

Camp Broadstone will offer a residential summer enrichment program for academically gifted youth currently in 4th through 9th grades. Morning enrichment classes and afternoon adventure programs stimulate the campers to grow intellectually, socially and physically. Campers in grades 7 through 9 will participate in a four-day out-of-camp advanced program held at Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.

Three two-week sessions are available: June 14 to 26, July 5 to 17 and July 19 to 31. Each two-week session costs $1,950.

One-week residential explorer sessions are offered for current 4th through 6th graders and cost $1,100 per session. These take place June 14 to 19, July 5 to 10, and July 19 to 24. 

Students must meet at least one of the following criteria to be counted as academically gifted: have an IQ of 120 or higher according to a standardized intelligence test, score in the 90th percentile or higher on an end-of-grade test or have been enrolled in Duke TIP (Talent Identification Program). Children’s Playhouse

All Summer

Rain or shine, a surefire recipe for fun this summer is a visit to The Children’s Playhouse, the High Country’s only children’s museum. A great lineup of music and art workshops will be offered throughout the summer, ranging from polymer bead creation to nature crafts. The summer workshop schedule will be available in April on the Playhouse website. 

Located near downtown Boone, The Children’s Playhouse offers ample hours for drop-in play. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Parents or caregivers must stay with their children. Admission is $5 per person and infants one year or younger are free.


Mountain Pathways Montessori School

Mountain Pathways provides children ages 4 to 10 with a wealth of experiences, activities and projects in an environment that is safe, relaxed and nurturing, yet stimulating. Children will be engaged in hands-on learning activities that expose them to science, practical life skills and sensorial explorations. They also explore nature and engage in a variety of art projects, games and special classes.

Cost for the daily camp, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., is $150 a week. After Camp Care is also available from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. for $25 a week. A deposit of $75 is required at registration with the balance due a week before the start of each session.


Improvisation Know How

Improvisation Know How is a stand-up, hands-on day camp with cast members of the Blowing Rock Stage Company show Shear Madness, a madcap comedy using improvisation at its root. Theatre professionals from across the country teach the Blowing Rock Stage Company’s summer camps.

Cost is $200 with a deposit of $50. Balance is due the first day of camp. Available to students ages 14 through 18, the camp is open from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Every student enrolled in any of the Stage Company’s camps will have the opportunity to attend a show performed and produced by the Stage Company throughout the summer at no extra charge. Registration begins Monday, March 16.


3-D Sculpture

Dr. Vicky Grube’s Art Education students will teach this sculpture class at the Turchin Center Monday through Friday, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. This class is offered to children ages 4 to 9 and is $50 for the public or $40 for Turchin Center members. 

Engage your inner sculptor by building with cardboard, tape, string, clay and a variety of other materials, then paint your final product—and maybe even sew on some bells! Advance web registration and payment are required, and enrollment is limited.  It will be held in the third floor classroom of the Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing.


Play Production

Students explore all areas of play production including characterization, costumes and props as they perform a short play. Hosted by the Blowing Rock Stage Company, this camp is available to kids ages 8 and 9 for June 15 to 19, and to kids ages 10 and 11 for the June 29 to July 3 session. The camp takes place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Theatre professionals from across the country teach the Blowing Rock Stage Company’s summer camps.

Camp Invention

Camp Invention, a nationally acclaimed hands-on science and invention day camp, is scheduled to begin Monday, June 22, at Watauga High School. Designed for students in kindergarten through 5th grade, the camp runs from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. 

Children participating in this day program will develop their creativity, teamwork and decision making skills. They will learn some of the basic principals of science, engineering and creative problem-solving as they build things, take things apart and do hands-on explorations.

The cost is $205 and discounts are available if you register before March 31. Some scholarships are available. There is an additional fee for late processing if registration is received after May 27. Maximum enrollment is 110. Registration has already started.


Summer Arts Camp

The Watauga Arts Council’s long running Summer Arts Camp featuring the Missoula Children’s Theatre is a multidisciplinary weeklong romp of interactive drama, storytelling, music, visual arts, music and more. The camp culminates in two public performances of Beauty and the Beast, complete with professionally designed scenery and costumes. Camp will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until the time of the evening performance on Friday, and an afternoon performance on Saturday. 

The camp is limited to 64 students from rising 1st through 10th graders. Registration has already started. This year, two performance tickets and one DVD of the production are included with the cost of registration. Cost is $150 for the first child in the family and $125 for each additional child. Summer Bugzzzz Show

Summer Bugzzz Show is a camp hosted by Blowing Rock Stage Company and designed for kids ages 4 and 5. They’ll get to look at summer bugs and create a story about mosquitoes, gnats, ladybugs, katydids and fireflies. Two half-day sessions will run from June 22 through 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Cost is $100 with a $50 deposit. Balance is due the first day of class. Registration begins Monday, March 16.


Forensic Camp

At the ASU Conferences & Institutes’ Forensic Camp, campers will get the opportunity to investigate a suspicious arson, detect and classify fingerprints, identify unknown drugs, compare trace evidence using a microscope and detect gunshot residue just like professional investigators. Here is a chance to become the scientist that actually analyzes the evidence and uses it to solve the crime.

The camp is available to students in grades 9 through 12. Participants will stay on the ASU campus with adult supervision. Register early by Tuesday, March 31, and receive the discounted price of $459. Regular registration is $484. Space is limited to 24 participants, so sign up soon. Cre8tive Drama Day Camp

The Cre8tive Drama Day Camp is a weeklong day camp focusing on creative drama and movement. The camp takes place Monday to Friday, June 29 to July 2, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the I.G. Greer Studio Theatre on the ASU campus.

Children and teens will be challenged to think creatively and encouraged to work collaboratively while exploring theatre and movement. Taught by Gordon Hensley and his student assistants, the Cre8tive Drama Day Camp is divided into several blocks:  Block One, ages 6 to 8; Block Two, ages 9 to 12; and Block Three, ages 13 to 16. Cost is $75. Advance web registration and payment are required, and enrollment is limited.


Creating in Clay

Instructor Dana Krengel will teach this weeklong art class from Monday through Friday, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m., in the Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing third floor classroom. This course is open to children ages 8 to 12 and costs $50 for the public or $40 for Turchin Center members. 

The Creating in Clay course engages children in making functional and artistic clay pieces while developing fine motor skills. Using step-by-step instruction and hands-on demonstrations for creating creatures, bowls, wind chimes and more, students will also learn about ceramic artists and fine art techniques to inspire their creations. Enchanted Forest

Hosted by Blowing Rock Stage Company, Enchanted Forest is a half-day camp from July 6 to 10. Kids ages 6 and 7 are invited to enter the magical world of a forest with its own talking trees, fairies, trolls and sprites. They get to become these characters and tell their stories about the spells they are under.

Two half-day sessions are available from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. for $100. A deposit of $50 is required with the balance due on the first day of camp. Registration begins Monday, March 16.


Math Camp

July 13 to 16

Math Camp is a social happening. Similar to a sports camp, teams are coached by an ASU student. Camp consists of hands-on activities, graphing calculators, computers, competitions, group interaction, prizes, snacks, fireside chats (without the fire) and magic tricks that introduce algebra word problems. Also, real world problems will answer the question, "What is math good for?"

Located on the 3rd floor of Walker Hall on the ASU campus, Math Camp is a day camp starting on Monday, July 13, at 4:30 p.m. and ending on Thursday, July 16. Students check in every evening by 6:00 p.m. and check out at 9:00 p.m. promptly all four nights. 

The cost of the camp is $120 per student, which includes instruction for 12 hours, limited accident illness insurance, certificates, awards, trophies and snacks. Space is limited to 120 campers. Payments received after 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, incur a $20 late fee. Register online or call for more information.


Musical Theatre Madness

Musical Theatre Madness, a summer day camp hosted by Blowing Rock Stage Company, offers a chance for students ages 11 to 18 to dance, sing and study the books of modern day musicals. They will also put together their own musical showpiece. 

Musical Theatre Madness is offered from July 13 to 17, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. daily. Cost is $200 with a deposit of $50. Balance is due on the first day of camp. Registration begins Monday, March 16.


Technical Theatre

July 20 to 24

Technical Theatre Camp is for students who wish to know more about the art and craft of designing costumes, lights, sound and sets. Available to students ages 14 to 18, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., campers will get to spend a week with the Blowing Rock Stage Company’s professional staffers as they get behind the scenes for their production of Bye Bye Birdie.

Cost is $200 with a deposit of $50. Balance is due on the first day of camp. Registration begins Monday, March 16.


Create Your Own Fantasy Chair

Suit yourself—or seat yourself—by creating your own functional and artistic seating device inspired by the furniture exhibition at the Turchin Center. Picture a panda bear bean bag, a pink flamingo folding chair, a robot bench made from assembled machine parts or a mushroom stool made from corrugated cardboard. Let your imagination loose, then take home your creation to enjoy for years to come.

Taught by Gayle Weitz’s Art Education students in the third floor classroom of the Arnold P. Rosen Family Education Wing of the Turchin Center, this course is available for children ages 8 through 12. The class is Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Cost is $65 for the public or $50 for Turchin Center members. Advance web registration and payment are required, and enrollment is limited.


Camp Green Screen

July 27 to 31

Campers ages 11 to 13 will learn how films such as Lord of the Rings and Twilight use green screen technology. They will get to work with the theatre professionals of Blowing Rock Stage Company as they develop characters using words, props and costumes.  They’ll get to shoot a scene and then see how it transforms into movie magic. 

Camp lasts from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, July 27 to 31. Cost is $200 with a deposit of $50. Balance is due on the first day of class. Registration begins Monday, March 16.
