Hayes School of Music This Week

After returning from ASU’s Spring Break, the Hayes School of Music performance calendar kicks into high gear, with plenty of concerts scheduled from now through the month of April.

Unless otherwise indicated, concerts take place in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. For more information about any of these performances, call 828-262-3020.

Low Brass Trio Thursday
A trio of low brass instrumentalists will perform in the Recital Hall on Thursday, March 19, at 6:00 p.m. Admission is free.

Saxophonist Matthew James and Pianist André Gribou Thursday
Guest artists Matthew James and André Gribou will perform Thursday, March 19, at 8:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. Admission is free.

James is an associate professor of saxophone and jazz studies at Ohio University. Gribou, a pianist, is music director of the Ohio University School of Dance.

They will perform with saxophonist Scott Kallestad and pianist Bair Shagdaron from Appalachian’s Hayes School of Music.

The program includes Alex Wilder’s Suite No. 1 for Tenor Saxophone and Piano, John Williams’ “Escapades” from the film Catch Me If You Can, Mark Phillips’ “Ménage à trios” and compositions by Paul Hindemith and Brian Bevelander.

American Guild of Organists Recital Sunday
The Boone Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present a chapter members recital on Sunday, March 22, at 4:00 p.m. in Rosen Concert Hall. This event is part of a worldwide, yearlong celebration of the pipe organ, the “International Year of the Organ.”

ASU students and community organists will play a variety of music for organ alone and for organ and single melody instruments. Featured will be a commissioned work and several prize-winning pieces from a competition held as part of the yearlong celebration. Composers include Leo Sowerby, J.S. Bach, Stephen Paulus and others. Student Viola Recital Sunday
Junior music performance major Catherine Williams performs a viola recital on Sunday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Student Saxophone Recital Sunday
Alli Schroeder, a senior music education major in the Hayes School of Music, will present a saxophone recital on Sunday, March 22, at 8:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall. Admission is free.

World Music Concert March 23
On Monday, March 23, members of various ensembles will perform world music in
Rosen Concert Hall at 8:00 p.m. Admission is free.
