Run For the Well 5K Road Race at Greenway Trail March 28
In the Sudan, many will walk up to five kilometers a day in search for fresh water. On Saturday, March 28, local participants will honor this effort by running a 5K road race at the Greenway Trail to raise awareness and money for the impoverished in Sudan.
The race, sponsored by ASU’s AISEC starts at 10:30 a.m., and the entry fee is $15 for pre-registration and $18 on the day of the event for students. Public admission is $18 for pre-registration and $20 on the day of the event. To pre-register, click to www.appstate.edu/pagesmith/54 and download the registration form.
Billy Riddle is the momentum behind this race. After being deeply affected by reports of the Sudanese suffering and the countless children that lay in its wake, Riddle packed his bags and traveled to Sudan for two months to survey the situation firsthand. Upon returning home to the states, Riddle was inspired to help. He formed a nonprofit organization called WhyTheWoods, to inspire others to question the state of the world today, and in questioning find the call to help. The inspiration behind WhyTheWoods comes from the solace that Riddle finds in the forest as well as the connection he feels to his spiritual source. In war-torn countries, and even here in the States, men, women and children often retreat to the woods to hide from violence as well as to find a place to rest when they have no roof over their heads.
“WhyTheWoods is a needs-based organization that provides outreach to our neighbors locally as well as to our global neighbors in Sudan,” said Riddle. The mission of WhyTheWoods is to empower those who are suffering with “love, hope, and knowledge,” he added.
WhyTheWoods has partnered with ASU’s AIESEC program to help continue the outreach that Riddle has already started. AIESEC is the world’s largest student based organization whose purpose is to support the development of global citizens and conscientious leaders. Together, WhyTheWoods and AIESEC are sponsoring the 5K road race, Run for the Well, to assist ongoing WhyTheWoods projects in Wadupe and Kichama, Sudan. Riddle and WhyTheWoods plan to travel to Wadupe in May to dig two wells and run a six-month Sanitation Education program with an approximate cost of $15000.
Sixty percent of the proceeds from the Run for the Well 5K will go directly to WhyTheWoods. The other remaining proceeds go to supporting nonprofit organizations bettering the local community, such as ASU’s AISEC.
