Magdalen Hsu-Li, an Asian American, feminist and out singer-songwriter, will present a talk called “The Redefinition of Identity: Asian, Feminist and Out” on Wednesday, April 8, at the ASU Plemmons Student Union. In the final scheduled appearance of its Diversity Lecture Series, the ASU Office of Multicultural Student Development presents singer-songwriter Magdalen Hsu-Li on Wednesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Ballroom of the Plemmons Student Union. Hsu-Li will present a talk called “The Redefinition of Identity: Asian, Feminist and Out.”
Hsu-Li is an internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter, painter and cultural activist. Performing Songwriter called her “exquisitely furious, beautiful, and exciting,” the New York Times described her music as “sweet, melodic, and real” and Yolk Magazine called her work “an achingly gorgeous collection of piano-based rock recalling the finest moments of Tori Amos or Ben Folds Five.”
In her talk, Hsu-Li shares her experiences as an out, Asian American woman growing up the rural South. The discussion delves into racism, prejudice, stereotyping, homophobia, bi-phobia within the LBGT community, filial piety and dealing with a severe disability (Tourette’s Syndrome). Hsu-Li also draws from her unique perspective and experience in the music industry, addressing myths, stereotypes and misrepresentations of women, Asians and LGBT-identified people in the arts.
“This presentation will help the audience gain a greater level of understanding about identity, finding purpose and finding one’s cultural home,” the Multicultural Student Development website said.
The lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Free parking is available in the new parking deck next to the Belk Library after 5:00 p.m. For more information, call 828-262-6252.
