AIRE Launches Community-Owned Solar Power Project—
Kickoff Event To Take Place April 3
The Appalachian Institute for Renewable Energy (AIRE) is about to launch the first community-owned solar project in Boone. In April, graduate students in ASU’s Department of Appropriate Technology will install a 2.5-kilowatt photovoltaic solar electric system on the roof of The Greenhouse, a green office building located on Depot Street in downtown Boone.

Grandfather Mountain Offers Dollar Days to High Country Residents in April
All High Country residents, along with their accompanying guests, are invited to visit Grandfather Mountain for $1 during the month of April with proof of local residency.
The special April Dollar Days $1 admission is offered to residents in the six counties represented by the NC High Country Host regional travel promotion organization: Mitchell, Avery, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Wilkes.

Help the High Country United Way Reach Its Fundraising Goal by March 31—Nonprofit in Danger of Falling Short by 20 Percent
With less than a week left in this year’s High Country United Way (HCUW) Campaign, the nonprofit, which supports 26 local agencies and dozens of programs in Watauga and Avery counties, is reaching out local residents for help in reaching its goal of $625,000. As of press time, the nonprofit is more than 20 percent short of their overall goal. The deadline to donate to the campaign is Tuesday, March 31. Read more …

8th Annual Diversity Celebration April 7—ASU Hosts Free Concerts, Workshops and Food Open to the Public
For the past eight years, Appalachian State University has held an annual Diversity Celebration to underscore its commitment to diversity and expose the campus and community to a multiplicity of cultures, talents, perspectives, arts and foods found in this region and around the world.
This year, the free event takes place on Tuesday, April 7, from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Plemmons Student Union on the ASU campus. The Diversity Celebration also includes the 13th Unity Festival—a community event that has taken place since 1992—and the third annual People of the Planet Soccer Tournament, which will take place on Sunday, April 5, at Kidd Brewer Stadium.

High Country Conservancy Celebrates Oliver Hill Project
Recent completion of the Oliver Hill Conservation Easement marks another achievement in what has been a dynamic year for the High Country Conservancy (HCC). Tom Andrews donated the conservation easement on his Oliver Hill property, located atop a prominent knoll in the Matney Community, near Valle Crucis. The easement was given to High Country Conservancy protecting wildlife habitat, scenic views and grazing pasture.
