A Festival For Sustainability
ASU Kicks Off Earth Month with Local Music and Information Festival Saturday
Singer-songwriter Crys Matthews is one of several local artists who will perform at the ASU-sponsored Festival for Sustainability this Saturday, April 4, in the parking lot behind Mast General Store in downtown Boone. The festival will also feature information booths from many of the school’s green initiatives, as well as a handful of local businesses and organizations.
This Saturday, April 4, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. the Western North Carolina Renewable Energy Initiative, a branch of the ASU Energy Center, will kick off Earth Month 2009 with A Festival for Sustainability in the rear parking lot of Mast General Store in downtown Boone. The event will feature information booths sponsored by various community and university organizations, as well as live music by several local bands.
A Festival for Sustainability is a community-oriented event designed to increase awareness about sustainable practices in Boone community including renewable energy production, energy efficient building practices, sustainable farming techniques, and local food.
Some of the organizations and businesses participating in A Festival for Sustainability include WNCREI, AIRE, ASUREI, ASUrecycles, ASU Solar Club, Watauga County Farmers’ Market, ASU Sustainable Transportation Club, the Electric Vehicle Club, Mountain Works, Green Business Council, Blue Ridge Energy Works, as well as some local arts and craft vendors and some Mast vendors, whose jellies and honeys come from regional sustainable farms.
Local bands slated to take the stage during the Saturday event include bluegrass and roots music band Southern Exposure, singer-songwriter Crys Matthews, roots punk trio Wings of Tin, Americana outfit Woodgrain, alt. country band Company Cowboy and funky rock band Groovenauts.
Along with a sustainable transportation biodiesel workshop being held earlier in the day, Saturday’s festival kicks off a month-long series of events designed to raise our awareness of the environment and promote local green initiatives that affect various aspects of our lives including diet, transportation systems, carbon footprint and housing.

With an array of organizations getting behind new and exciting local green initiatives, having just one Earth Day isn’t enough. Instead, the ASU Earth Day Committee organized a month-long series of a dozen activities to inform and inspire local students and citizens.
