Documentary Screening Features Bluegrass Musicians April 8

Belk Library and Information Commons and University Documentary Services at Appalachian State University will present highlights from the Hemrick Video Collection on Wednesday, April 8, at 7:00 p.m. in Room 114 in the library.

Chuck Hemrick is a traditional musician who worked as a camera operator for the High Point-based television station WGHP. He produced Blue Ridge Views, a popular weekly news feature highlighting cultural traditions, especially traditional music. These two-to-three minute features were broadcast from 1990 to 1993.

When he retired, Hemrick donated the original tapes of Blue Ridge Views to the library’s W.L. Eury Appalachian Collection.

The screening will be the first public viewing for many of the videos. Musicians featured in the highlights include Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Ralph Stanley and Sheila Kay Adams Barnhill. Belk Library Special Collections staff will provide commentary and answer questions about the collection. The library’s Special Collections preserves the past and engages the present by sharing the wealth of resources.

The University Documentary Services (UDS) is a relatively new office on campus. Its mission is to support students, staff and faculty work in short scholarly documentary projects. UDS resides in ASU’s University College, which consists of the university’s integrated general education curriculum, academic support services, residential learning communities, interdisciplinary degree programs and co-curricular programming—all designed to support the work of students inside and outside of the classroom.
