Shooting Stars Announces 2009 Performing Acts, Artists

After months of rehearsing, and auditioning, 25 acts will grace the stage for Shooting Stars 2009, to be held Friday, April 24.

For eight hours on March 21, Watauga County students sang, danced and otherwise performed their hearts out before the Shooting Stars judges, vying for a coveted spot in this year’s lineup.

“We had fifteen different genres enter this year,” said Shooting Stars Producer Alison Idol. “We are so proud of all of the students for their creativity and determination to be in this unique and exciting program. In the end, the judges settled on 25 acts that will delight the audience.”

Tickets for Shooting Stars are on sale now at BB&T locations and Farthing Auditorium.

They are $10 for the general public and $5 for Watauga County Schools students and employees.

Now in its 11th year, Shooting Stars is a unique showcase for the talents of Watauga County students. All work is independently judged by professionals, who insist that the performers meet a number of different criteria, including stage presence, talent and originality.

In addition to the performing arts portion of the program, visual artists are also currently in competition for a spot in the program. Their artwork is currently on display at the Boone Mall, and 50 pieces have been selected for inclusion in the 2009 show. The winners will be interviewed and their work shown during the performance on April 24.

Many of the students are donating their artwork to the foundation to be sold at a festive evening reception and dinner at Hound Ears Club, along with pieces created especially for the foundation by many renowned artists.

“Bob Timberlake, Joe Miller, Richard Tumbleston and a host of other artists are creating unique pieces for us out of chalkboards,” said Cynthia Fox, coordinator for the Visual Arts portion and the auction. “State Representative Cullie Tarleton will serve as the auctioneer, so we’re guaranteed a really fun evening.”

“Shooting Stars is the Watauga Education Foundation’s primary fundraiser,” said Rebecca Saunders, president of the foundation. “This year will be the biggest and best yet,” she added. “We are really kicking it up a notch with our new and fun events for the students and the community.” The foundation is particularly excited about the Shooting Stars Golf Classic scheduled for Friday, May 15, at Hound Ears Club. At the tournament, someone will win two season tickets to the 91st PGA Championship.

Tickets for all events are available by contacting the Watauga Education Foundation.

Since its inception 19 years ago, the Watauga Education Foundation has allocated more than 600,000 in funding to supplement state and local education budgets, providing WCS students with innovative programs, teachers with scholarships and the community with a strong partnership for education.
