Locals Needed as Extras for Video Shoot at Horn in the West
Nashville musician and former Boone resident Steve Virginia is inviting everyone in Boone to Horn in the West on Thursday, May 7, for a music video shoot.
Former Boone resident and now Nashville musician, Steve Virginia, would like the entire population of Boone to show up at 3:00 p.m. to his video shoot at Horn in the West on Thursday, May 7.
If some people can’t get in, Virginia said he would like them to hang out in the parking lot and listen from there to what is going on.
The video shoot is for “A Country Kind of Life,” the song which Virginia intends to be a single from his upcoming album. The crowd maximum is between 2,500 and 3,000.
Virginia’s song is a kind of anthem for Boone. The Watauga High School and ASU grad “wrote it about growing up and playing music and hanging out with friends in Boone.” The origin of the song is the reason he is coming back for the video.
“[Boone] is one of those places that are so magical for me and being able to show that through the video is what I want to do,” he said.
The video will mix old and new footage and follow the story line of the song. A huge change is that, when he recorded “A Country Kind of Life,” Virginia had a gospel choir sing the crowd part. In the studio, Virginia recorded the choir “12 times and dubbed it over and over,” but during filming, the real crowd will take over.
After the shoot, Virginia will perform for about 90 minutes after a 40-minute set by Amantha Mill. Some of the audience will be chosen to appear later in a bonfire scene—and actually get a close-up in the video.
Just like Boone, the song is one of those magical ones that seemed to flow out of nowhere.
“I came up with this line, ‘Born with a dewdrop high on a mountaintop,’ and I couldn’t figure out what to do with it,” said Virginia.
“I sometimes…hear songs and they are just like the way they feel,” he said, “[So] I really listen to the groove of the songs.” One day, “that song just fell out in about twenty minutes,” in the wake of the original first line.
“I wasn’t thinking about anything when I wrote it, but I was feeling nostalgic about Boone,” he said. Virginia became a local when he moved here with his family as an infant and he likes to “claim Boone as my hometown because I have never lived anywhere else,” he said.
Virginia has always wanted to see a big concert performed at Horn in the West and finally decided he should just go ahead. He worked at Horn at night one summer.
“Some of my really good friends are still on the board at Horn. I still have an affinity for [it],” he said. Horn in the West is a “perfect setting [for the video]. It’s very rural in there but still has structure to it.”
He also hopes the video shoot might evolve into “the first in a concert series and help [Horn] realize the potential of a live venue… There is nothing like playing in the outdoors,” he said.
