Early Bird Wildflower Walk and Plant Sale at Daniel Boone Gardens April 25
The Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone will hold its second annual Early Bird Wildflower Walk and Plant Sale on Saturday, April 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Admission is free, but donations to the nonprofit gardens are appreciated.
For wildflower enthusiasts this walk is a rare chance to enjoy some of the most spectacular early spring wildflowers of the Blue Ridge in a quiet, in-town setting; the gardens’ regular season begins May 1, daily through October 31. The wildflower event is also a chance for gardeners in the High Country to buy top-quality locally grown plant material.
Some of the region’s top nursery growers will be on hand with a large variety of hardy native azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, dogwoods and other flowering trees and shrubs, as well as perennial flowers, herbs and vegetables.
The Daniel Boone Native Gardens are featured in the current April 2009 issue of Our State Magazine, which calls the 3-acre gardens “a trove of mountain blooms.” Spring blooms at the April 25 wildflower walk may include redbud, Virginia bluebell, shooting star, wild gingers, trout lily, dogwood and wood anemone.
With a gift late last year of 120 plants from Lamtree Farms of Warrensville, many of them rare or endangered species grown locally, the gardens will be more beautiful than ever this spring. A Town of Boone grant has gone a long way toward getting the many shrubs, trees and wildflowers planted throughout the gardens.
In addition to Lamtree Farms at the plant sale, growers include Alicia Breton of My Favorite Plants, the Tennessee Rose Native Azalea Nursery, Hickory Lane Gardens and Shady Grove Gardens & Nursery.
The Shady Grove nursery will be taking advance orders for transplants of tomatoes and sweet peas by calling 828-297-4098. Potted plant offerings will include mountain mint, echinacea, native honeysuckle and hellebore.
