Shooting Stars at Farthing Auditorium April 24
2008 Shooting Stars performers gather for a curtain call after the show
Student performers in Watauga County have worked long and hard to prepare for the night of Friday, April 24—the 2009 performance of Shooting Stars. The talent show, sponsored by the Watauga Education Foundation, will feature 25 performing acts, including dancing, singing, a rock band and a comedy spoof. The show will also feature the works of 50 student visual artists.
Shooting Stars begins at 6:30 p.m. at Farthing Auditorium, located on the ASU campus in Boone. Tickets for Shooting Stars are on sale now at BB&T locations and Farthing Auditorium. They are $10 for the general public and $5 for Watauga County Schools students and employees. All proceeds benefit the Watauga Education Foundation.
“We are so proud of all of the students for their creativity and determination to be in this unique and exciting program,” said Shooting Stars Producer Alison Idol in a press release. “In the end, the judges settled on 25 acts that will delight the audience.”
Now in its 11th year, Shooting Stars is a unique showcase for the talents of Watauga County students. All work is independently judged by professionals, who insist that the performers meet a number of different criteria, including stage presence, talent and originality.
In between the performing acts, the audience will watch interviews with the visual artists on Farthing’s large projection screen. Many of the students are donating their artwork to the foundation to be sold at a festive evening reception and dinner at Hound Ears Club, along with pieces created especially for the foundation by many renowned artists.

“Bob Timberlake, Joe Miller, Richard Tumbleston and a host of other artists are creating unique pieces for us out of chalkboards,” said Cynthia Fox, coordinator for the Visual Arts portion and the auction, in the press release. “State Representative Cullie Tarleton will serve as the auctioneer, so we’re guaranteed a really fun evening.”
Blowing Rock Frameworks & Gallery has generously donated all of the frames for the students’ and professionals’ art works, said Melanie Bullard, executive director of the Watauga Education Foundation.
