Food as a metaphor for life is the theme of One Meatball, the Concert. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 2, at the Ashe Civic Center and features singer, songwriter, guitarist and entertainer Christine Lavin as she celebrates men, women, life, love and food. The evening actually kicks off with May Meatball Madness, the first ever meatball cooking contest in Ashe County. Local cooks and chefs of all degrees are invited to submit their favorite meatball recipe to compete for first place and the title of May Meatball King/Queen. The tasting takes place between 6:16 and 7:15 p.m. prior to the concert. To top it all off, concertgoers will have the opportunity to participate and vote in the meatball tasting portion of the event.
“Christine is an exciting and very entertaining singer, songwriter and guitarist,” said Jane Lonon, executive director of the Ashe County Arts Council. “We are happy to have her return to the stage of the Ashe Civic Center. One Meatball, the Concert will be surrounded by several fun food events, making an evening full of fun, food and music.”
The evening is not just about metaphoric meatballs or real ones either—beverages, cheese, breads and desserts will also be available. Food related artwork, sculptured food and many surprises will be in store for those attending the event. As for Lavin, The New York Times describes her voice as having the quality of liquid silver and Lavin’s performances are renown for their witty, smart and sophisticated style. In her concert that is all-about-food, Lavin serves up the menu of our lives and it goes something like this when she uses it in metaphor: love, tomato puddin’; good times, bottle of wine; loss, heartbreak diet; obsessions, bacon; choices difficult and otherwise, baked Sea Bass; and sweet, bread pudding with whipped cream.
One Meatball garners its history from Lavin’s 2006 album of the same name from Appleseed Recordings. The album featured 19 singer-songwriters who turned their favorite recipes and food-related memories into song and includes a 96-page cookbook.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for students for reserved seating; the meatball tasting costs $5 per person. Purchase tickets at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson or call the Ashe County Arts Council at 336-846-2787.
