MerleFest Takes Over Wilkes Community College This Weekend
Doc Watson has long maintained that his goal is to perform on stage as if he were sitting in his living room picking with his best friends and family. Amazingly enough, Watson’s grandfatherly demeanor, informal chatter and undeniable warmth have long conveyed that very real sense of intimacy not only to the people sitting nearest to the stage, but even to those sitting in the last row. At age 86, the Deep Gap native’s ability to connect with fans young and old is uncanny.

Slightly Down But Not Out—Appalachian Mountains Preservation Act Takes Blow, Survives To See Another Committee
House Bill 340, the Appalachian Mountains Preservation Act, did not come to a vote in a Tuesday, April 21, meeting of the N.C. House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources and is now on the table in the N.C Senate Commerce Committee, of which Sen. Steve Goss (D-45) is a member.

Progress Through Partnerships—Watauga County Cooperative Extension Presents Report to the People
On March 31, North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue authorized the creation of Grandfather Mountain State Park after legislation to create the new park passed both chambers of the 2009 N.C. General Assembly without a dissenting vote.
Perdue’s authorization is slightly misleading to the public, however, as the state has yet to finalize the purchase of the mountain and take over certain management duties.
