Watauga Community Band Concert May 3

The Watauga Community Band will perform a spring concert on Sunday, May 3, at 3:00 p.m. at Rosen Concert Hall, located in the Broyhill Music Center on the ASU campus. Admission is free.
The 50-member band will perform Aaron Copland’s “Variations on a Shaker Melody,” Goldman’s “Shenandoah March,” Rossini’s “Overture to the Barber of Seville,” Grainger’s “Irish Tune from County Dairy,” Haddad’s “Suite for Tuba,” Fillmore’s “His Honor,” William Harbinson’s “Introduction Allegro, and Dance” and an arrangement of “Star Trek through the years” by John Moss.
The Watauga County Community Band formed in 1986 as an all-volunteer concert band composed of community members and Appalachian State University staff and students. Under the direction of Dr. Charles Isley, the band first organized at Hardin Park School in Boone and held its first concert on February 8, 1987.
The band is currently under the direction of Bill Winkler.
The community band represents a cross-section of Wataugans, including ASU music majors, current and retired music teachers, amateur musicians, retirees, public school children, professionals and many others. To join, no auditions are required—all you need is an instrument.
Show tunes, marches and traditional pieces are among the Community Band’s staples. The band typically performs a Memorial Day weekend show and at various community venues throughout the summer.
