17th Annual Taste of the High Country May 5
Fill your plates and your bellies at the 17th annual Taste of the High Country, a fundraiser for Watauga County Habitat for Humanity taking place Tuesday, May 5, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone.
Nineteen High Country restaurants will serve food at the event, including Bandana’s BBQ, Casa Rustica, Canyons, Char, The Manor House at Chetola Resort, Earth Fare, Gadabouts Catering, Glidewell’s, Jackson Dining Room at the Broyhill Inn, Makoto’s, Marble Slab Creamery, Maw’s Produce, Mother Nature’s Produce, Mr. Original Gyros, Pepper’s, Red Onion Café, Stick Boy Bakery, Vidalia’s and Woodlands BBQ.
The event will also feature live music by Andy Owens and a silent auction. Items up for bid include a children’s bicycle; furniture pieces, including a hall table, antique vanity with mirror, Boston rocker and antique chest; a small Sony stereo system; and gift certificates from Dan’l Boone Inn, Sakura, Troy’s Diner, Capone’s Pizza, Beef O’Brady’s and other establishments.
All proceeds from Taste of the High Country will benefit Habitat for Humanity’s building efforts for local low-income families. Last year, the event raised about $14,000 for the organization.
Funds from the 2009 Taste of the High Country will aid in the completion of Watauga Habitat’s 21st home and the development of the first home to be built in Watauga Habitat’s new neighborhood near Green Valley School.
“Watauga Habitat’s greatest challenge has been the lack of buildable and affordable land,” according to a Watauga Habitat press release. “The recent purchase of 20.66 acres near Green Valley School will allow the building of more than 20 homes for deserving partner families in coming years.”
Watauga Habitat is currently in need of volunteers and financial support to complete the purchase of the land and begin development of the new Green Valley neighborhood. Habitat homes cost about $70,000 to build and are some of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly homes being built, the press release said.
Habitat homeowners give back to other low-income families by directing their mortgage payments to help pay for the next Habitat home to be built.
Corporate Sponsors supporting the 2009 Taste of the High Country are Boone Construction Company, Deal, Mosley, & Smith, LLP, Harris Teeter, Highlands Union Bank, Mast Stores, Olszewski Construction Company and Piedmont Federal Bank.
