Beech Mountain Brings Biggest Loser To High Country This Summer

Ten-Week Competition Kicks Off June 13

Have you ever been watching NBC at 8:00 on a Tuesday night and wondered if you could be the Biggest Loser? You’re in luck. The Town of Beech Mountain is giving you the chance this summer as The Buckeye Recreation Center presents the 2009 Biggest Loser Competition, inspired by the famous television show.

Early registration is now open through May 30. The cost during early registration is $5 for recreation center members and $10 for non-members. Late registration opens June 5 and costs $10 for members and $30 for non-members. The competition begins the following Saturday, June 13, with the first weigh-in for registered participants.

Each competitor will receive a Biggest Loser t-shirt, pedometer and a personalized Biggest Loser Manual full of wellness principles, nutrition tips and motivation. Competitors will also have full access to the Buckeye Recreation Center facility, which includes amenities such as tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness area and indoor and outdoor walking tracks.

Daniel Scagnelli, fitness and wellness coordinator for Buckeye Recreation Center, is organizing the competition.

“We think that it will really be a big help to a lot of people,” said Scagnelli.

Scagnelli will be conducting a one-on-one fitness assessment to test the flexibility, muscle strength and overall Body Mass Index, or BMI, of each participant. He will also be on-hand as an exercise and nutrition consultant. As a certified personal trainer and graduate student enrolled in ASU’s exercise science program, he knows what he’s talking about.

Each week competitors will face a couple of friendly competitions that focus on fitness education and teamwork. Prizes provided by local businesses will be available. There will also be weekly weigh-ins to help everyone keep track of their progress.

In the end, the top three biggest losers will receive recognition with an as-of-yet unannounced grand prize going to 2009’s Biggest Loser.

Prizes include health food coupons from businesses like Lowe’s Foods and Sorrento’s Bistro, nutrition and exercise books and exercise equipment.

The Buckeye Recreation Center is located at 206 Grassy Gap Creek Road in Beech Mountain.
