High Country United Way Receives $12,196 in Stimulus Funding
Local Service Agencies Urged To Apply For Funding By May 14
The High Country United Way announced on Wednesday, April 29, that Watauga County will receive $12,196 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) to supplement food and shelter programs in the county.
The selection was made by a national board that is chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from the American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities and the United Way of America.
A local board chaired by the High Country United Way and including representatives from nonprofits, elected officials, county government and private citizens will determine how the funds awarded to Watauga County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds made available through the ARRA.
Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must: (1) be private voluntary nonprofits or units of government, (2) be eligible to receive federal funds, (3) have an accounting system, (4) practice nondiscrimination, (5) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs and (6) if they are a private voluntary organization, they must have a volunteer board. Qualified agencies are urged to apply.
Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for ARRA emergency food and shelter program funds should submit in writing a letter of request outlining the program for funding and addressing how the program meets the eligibility terms described above. Letters should be submitted to Linda Slade, High Country United Way, PO Box 247, Boone, NC 28607, by Thursday, May 14. Eligible agencies will be interviewed by local board members on Tuesday, May 19.
