More Than 70,000 Festivalgoers Converge on MerleFest 2009
The economy may be down and the sun was scorching at times, but more than 70,000 music lovers basked in the glorious spring weather at Wilkes Community College during last weekend’s 22nd annual MerleFest.
According to a press release, attendance on Thursday was the fifth highest on a Thursday in the festival’s history.

Perdue Orders Furloughs For All State Employees—ASU Chancellor Peacock Issues Letter of Announcement and Explanation
Gov. Beverly Perdue signed an executive order on Tuesday, April 28, calling for unpaid furloughs for all state employees. The order is in response to a worsening state budget shortfall that analysts now say could climb to $3 billion. Perdue’s move is expected to save the state $65 million this fiscal year.

Clyde Jones Decides Not To Re-Open Auto Parts Store—Local Parishioners Honor Long-Time Business Owner
On March 20, after cataloging and liquidating more than 300,000 auto parts, Clyde Jones turned off the lights at his long-standing store, locked the door and said goodbye to a structure that housed so many of his precious memories from the last 55 years. Clyde’s sad story is one of many, as his business is one of the casualties of the Highway 421 widening project that began last year with right-of-way acquisitions—one of which was Clyde’s building, which will be demolished in the coming weeks.

High School Musical 2 On Stage in Blowing Rock Thursday through May 9—Tickets Available for All Nights!
Disney’s High School Musical franchise has taken the nation’s youth by storm, and beginning Thursday, April 30, the smash hit High School Musical 2 comes to the Hayes Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock for a “fabulous” stage production. Boone’s Solar System—Installation of Boone’s First Community Owned Solar Project Complete
The Appalachian Institute for Renewable Energy (AIRE) has taken a step towards independence from coal-produced energy. This week the group completed installation of a 2.5-kilowatt photovoltaic solar electric system on the roof of their home office, The Greenhouse in Boone.
