Studio K Spring Recital Saturday and Sunday

Studio K will perform a 45-minute ballet version of “Alice in Wonderland” on Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, at Farthing Auditorium.

More than 350 dancers will perform in Studio K Dance Workshop’s annual spring recital, taking place Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3, at Farthing Auditorium on the ASU campus. The dance company will perform ballet versions of the popular children’s stories “Alice in Wonderland” and “Peter and the Wolf.”

The performances are at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $11 for adults and $8 for students and children.

“Alice in Wonderland” is the larger production of the two short ballets, lasting 45 minutes and featuring a sizable dancing cast ranging from age 2 to adult. “Peter and the Wolf” is 25 minutes long and features a cast of teens and adults. An intermission will take place between the two pieces.

Cay Harkins, owner of Studio K, said the company began performing two short ballets—instead of one long ballet—for the spring recital about three years ago.

“We’ve found that instead of doing a full-length ballet, it’s easier on the public and kids to do two ballets,” Harkins said. “It’s been a lot more entertaining.”

Two dancers rehearse for Studio K Dance Workshop's upcoming spring recital, taking place Saturday and Sunday, May 2 and 3.

“Alice in Wonderland” is a classic tale about a young girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world full of peculiar creatures. Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote “Peter and the Wolf”as a children’s introduction to the orchestra. Each of the characters have musical themes played by different instruments. Local Sqrambled Scuares game show host Buzz Berry will narrate the “Peter and the Wolf” performance.

“When you hear the music, it fits with the dancers,” Harkins said.

The lead dancers in both performances are high school seniors who are graduating this year.

“This is their place of honor,” Harkins said.

The ballets also feature elaborate sets, including the queen’s courtyard in “Alice” and a tree and treehouse in “Peter,” that are shipped in from California and Michigan.

Past spring recitals by Studio K have featured “Snow White,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella” and “Swan Lake.”
