Bob Timberlake, Joe Miller, Richard Tumbleston! These are but a few of the artists who have created one-of-a-kind creations for the inaugural Shooting Stars Benefit Art Auction, scheduled for Friday, May 15, at Hound Ears Club. The pieces, along with donated artwork created by students, will be sold to the highest bidders to raise money for the Watauga Education Foundation.
“The auction seemed like a natural progression of the visual arts portion of the Shooting Stars,” said Executive Director Melanie Bullard. “We are helping the students experience the real world scenario of what it is like to see their creations sold. To be in the company of such renowned artists is an especially exciting time.”
Each professional artist was asked to create a work of art from a chalkboard.
“We have some really whimsical and fun pieces,” said Cynthia Fox, Shooting Stars Visual Arts Producer. Gayle Weitz carved a pair of glasses from her board, while Joe Miller created a signature watercolor that is stunning. Timberlake and Tumbleston left room on their boards for people to use them as actual chalkboards. “We are simply in awe of the generosity of these local artists,” she said.
Several Watauga County Schools art teachers also created chalkboard art or had their classes do the creating.
“This is art for your home you won’t find anywhere else,” added Fox.
We are extremely grateful to Tim Miller at Blowing Rock Frameworks and Gallery,” added Bullard. “Tim donated all the framing for the student artwork and many of the professional pieces. We couldn’t have done this without his expertise and I encourage everyone in this community to think of Blowing Rock Frameworks first, when you have framing needs.”
Rep. Cullie Tarleton (D-93) will act as auctioneer for the event
“I hope that anyone who is interested in art and supporting education, will come out and enjoy a great evening,” said Fox. “It’s a chance to celebrate our local talent, get a great piece of art and kick-off the summer season.”
Tickets for the auction, which begins Friday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. are on sale now for $35, which includes dinner and wine.
The foundation is also hosting the inaugural Shooting Stars Golf Classic at Hound Ears on May 15 and tickets to the tournament include the auction.
