Under One Roof

15th Annual Home & Remodeling Exposition at Holmes Center May 15 and 16

Numerous products and services are involved in building or renovating a home, and on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16, you can find representatives from home improvement businesses—from construction and landscaping to financing and insurance—all under one roof.

The 15th annual Home & Remodeling Exposition takes place at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 15, and from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Admission is free. The event is sponsored by the High Country Home Builders Association, a nonprofit organization that serves as the voice of the home building industry in Watauga and Avery counties.

“The purpose of this show is to promote the home building industry in a positive light in our community and to provide our vendors who are professionals in the building industry with a venue where they can actually connect with their customers one on one,” said David Scott, chair of the High Country Home Builders Association for the past eight years. The event also allows industry members to network and to learn about new products and ideas, he said.

The exposition will feature more than 90 vendors at 103 booths. Products and services represented include construction, landscaping, pest control, guttering, windows, doors, painting, vacuum systems, spas, basements, financing and insurance. Booths for sinks and countertops, natural building materials, energy-saving devices and tools are also likely to be present.

“It’s an opportunity to do some one-stop shopping,” Scott said. “You’ll be talking to the professionals that would be doing the work and getting as much information from those folks as you possibly can. You can actually meet the person face to face.”

An ever-growing presence at the annual home show is the green building industry, Scott said. Many of the vendors are certified green building professionals.

“We’ll have an entire green aisle that we’re showcasing during the show this year,” he said. “There will be a lot of emphasis placed on sustainable construction.”

Other events and activities include free seminars, the Healthy Gourmet Cooking Show, a nail driving contest and door prizes awarded every hour. Bandana’s BBQ will serve food on Friday and Chick fil-A will serve food on Saturday. A new addition to this year’s show is the Boone Fire Department, which will bring a burn trailer to demonstrate the benefits of a home sprinkler system.

“Even if you’ve been to the show year after year, there will still be things to see,” Scott said. “You’re going to find someone there to help you improve your way of life.”

The Home & Remodeling Exposition is a fundraiser for the High Country Home Builders Association. Proceeds are earmarked for the association’s annual scholarship program. The Daniel Everett Scott Memorial Scholarship, named for David Scott’s late son, is awarded to local high school students or college students who are pursuing a career related to the construction industry.

Sponsors of the 2009 Home & Remodeling Exposition are MHS Technologies, Blue Ridge Electric, Blue Ridge Energies, A Flooring Outlet, AF Financial Group, BB&T Mortgage, Blake Metal Sales, Sears of Boone and Wellborn Insulation.

Parking is available at the Holmes Convocation Center parking lot and at the Hill Street parking lot. A free shuttle will transport attendees from the Hill Street lot to the Holmes Center. Hill Street is the first left off of Rivers Street by the Holmes Center.
