This Saturday, May 16, Canyons will host the 4th annual P.B. Scott’s Reunion Party featuring live music by Raleigh-based party band Rewind. The show will start at 10:00 p.m. There is a $5 cover charge at the door.
Rewind will pack the dance floor as they rock out dozens of familiar hits from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. During the band’s set break, High Country Press Publisher Ken Ketchie will take the stage for a series of contests where patrons can win cash prizes based on their musical knowledge.
Canyons owner and former P.B. Scott’s silent partner Bart Conway has long been one of the High Country’s biggest supporters of live music and looks forward to the familiar faces and great music that make the P.B. Scott’s Reunion Party a fun event each year.
“I think it helps people relive the memories,” said Conway. “It’s been closed since 1983. They run into people they knew from back in those days and they remember how it was. It was very unique.”
While it seems downright strange that some of the most famous musical acts in the country would frequent a tiny town nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains, the success of P.B. Scott’s during the late 1970s and early 1980s really boils down to geography.
On multiple occasions, former club owner and booking agent Randy Kelly has explained that Blowing Rock is conveniently located approximately halfway between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, Ga., making it the perfect mid-week tour stop for national acts on their way between the two major cities. High Country residents didn’t know how very lucky they were.
“There was an absence of routing facilities for national acts going up and down the eastern seaboard, and word leaked out about an acoustically great venue totally concentrated on the performance,” said Kelly. “The national acts’ agents all started calling us.”
Hearing the stories of those who were fortunate enough to be living in the area during those heady days, it is difficult to imagine the scene: throngs of students and young local residents gathering between P.B. Scott’s, Clyde’s and Coffey’s (now Twigs) along Highway 321 in Blowing Rock. In the days before Boone got beer and wine, there was simply no other place to be.
As always, Kelly will have classic P.B. Scott’s T-shirts for sale.
The 4th annual P.B. Scott’s Reunion Party will start at 10:00 p.m. For more information, call Canyons at 828-295-7661 or click to www.canyonsbr.com. To hear music by Rewind, click to www.rewindwebsite.com.
