On Friday and Saturday, June 26 and 27, Alliance Bible Fellowship will host its 2nd annual SCORE Soccer Camp. The event, which is open to girls and boys between ages 5 and 10, will take place at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone. Friday night’s session will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday’s session will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Registration begins on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
Instructors at this year’s camp include Watauga High School head coach Toni Becvinovski, a former professional soccer player in Australia. Several current and former WHS players and members of the High Country Soccer Association will also be on hand to lend their skills to the proceedings by teaching children basic soccer skills and leading drills. Last year’s inaugural SCORE Soccer Camp drew nearly 60 children. Alliance Bible Fellowship Student Pastor Scott Burns said the camp is preparing for double that number of participants for this year’s camp.
“For the younger ones, it serves as an introduction for what soccer is like instead of them having to register for a whole season,” said Burns. “The older ones can get a little more skill and technique training if they want that.”
Registration for the camp is $40 and includes a custom soccer jersey, shorts, a gear bag, ball and socks. Children can bring cleats and shin guards, but they are not required.
Following Saturday’s session, Alliance Bible Fellowship volunteers will fire up the grill for a cookout at the complex. Participants and their families are invited to enjoy food and fellowship.
Following the cookout, kids can participate in intramural games and scrimmages beginning at 1:00 p.m.
“We saw it as a way to serve our community and introduce people to soccer and to our church,” said Burns. “We also wanted to get kids out and about and keep them active.”
