Blue Ridge Community Theatre Presents The Dixie Swim Club May 29 to 31

A tale of enduring friendships and a night of delectable treats are in store for the Blue Ridge Community Theatre’s next production. The community theatre company presents the play The Dixie Swim Club Friday through Sunday, May 29 to 31, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center in Boone.

Show times are 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 3:00 and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. The play, written by Asheville playwrights Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten, is about five Southern women whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team. Every year, they set aside a long weekend in August to recharge those relationships. Free from husbands, kids and jobs, they meet at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks to catch up, laugh and meddle in each other’s lives. The Dixie Swim Club focuses on four of those weekends and spans a period of 33 years.

But, said Director Trimella Chaney, “the show is not just for women. It’s really about those friendships that you build that see you through a lifetime.”

The cast is Kay Stacy as Cheree Hollinger, the former swim team captain; Amy Beane as Bernadette Sims, the public school teacher from Spivey’s Corner; Shela Deal as Donna Grayson, the successful, single attorney in Atlanta; Cindy Brown as Lexi Richards, a Chapel Hill event planner obsessed with appearances and plastic surgery; and Kathy Cottrell as Jeri Neal McFeely, who left college to become a nun.

“They help each other through things that happen that we all face in normal living,” Chaney said. “We have those moments that we need our friends to help us through.”

About the cast, Chaney said, “I feel like I have a dream team. These are wonderful women in our community. It has just been such a dream for me to get to work with all of them.”

The play will last about two hours. Between each of the four scenes, the audience will be served snacks that are discussed in the play, including biscuits.

“You cannot have a Southern comedy without having delicious Southern biscuits,” Chaney said.

Tickets are $25 per person and include the food. Tickets are available at the Broyhill Inn, Boone Drug at Deerfield and online at www.brctnc.org. Advance purchase is encouraged because of limited seating. For more info, email dixieswimclub09@yahoo.com.
