Watauga County Effectively Postpones Revaluation—Decision Underscores Local Effect of Economic Downturn
Acknowledging the slumping real estate market at the local, state and national levels, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, by consensus, directed Watauga County Tax Administrator Kelvin Byrd to cease all current actions for preparing the scheduled 2010 property tax revaluation, effectively deferring the process for one to four years.

Last Friday, Chrysler dealerships around the nation received letters from the company that clearly spelled out that particular location’s future: who will go and who will stay.
The letter delivered to Ross Chrysler Jeep Dodge around 11:00 a.m. last Friday “means we stay in business and continue to service the community,” said Raymond Goda, general manager and operating partner of Ross Chrysler Jeep Dodge.

Wildcat Lake Thrives Again—Opening Celebration This Saturday
After nearly four years of closure for repairs, the cool waters of Banner Elk’s Wildcat Lake will once again be open to the public beginning Saturday, May 23. The Edgar Tufts Memorial Association (ETMA), the owner and administrator of the lake, will host an opening celebration on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Keep On GROWING—New River Organic Growers Embraces Busiest Summer Season Yet
Thanks to a new truck, a new website, new grant funding and several new growers, New River Organic Growers is gearing up for what promises to be its best growing season to date. Formed in 2000, the New River Organic Growers (NROG) are a group of dedicated family farmers in the High Country who employ organic farming methods that preserve farmland and cultivate healthy soils. The coop’s 18 member farms are located throughout Ashe, Watauga, Alleghany, Wilkes and Yancey counties.
