NCDOT Announces New Highway 321 Weekly Road Closure
Highway to Close for Blasting Between 8:00 p.m. Monday and 5:00 a.m. Tuesday
“This is a big one,” said North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Resident Engineer Frank Gioscio, who called regional press institutions on Monday to announce a third blasting time for construction crews working on Highway 321 between Lenoir and Blowing Rock.
Just as motorists were getting used to Highway 321 being closed between 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday for blasting, NCDOT is adding a new, third weekly highway closure. According to Gioscio, Highway 321 will now close between 8:00 p.m. on Monday and 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday every week, in addition to closing for two hours each Tuesday and Thursday. The nine-hour Monday closure begins on Monday, June 1, and signage announcing the closure should be up by the end of next week, said Gioscio.
The additional blasting time will expedite completion of the project, which, according to Gioscio, is about 75 to 80 percent completed as of press time.
Gioscio expects the road closures on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to continue until late August or early September.
