8th Annual Martin and Doris Rosen Summer Symposium on Remembering the Holocaust This Summer
ASU’s Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies will be sponsoring the 8th annual Martin and Doris Rosen Summer Symposium “Remembering the Holocaust” from Sunday, July 19, to Thursday, July 23, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. While the symposium is geared toward public school teachers, everyone is invited to attend. All events are free and open to the public.
Distinguished speakers such as Dr. Michael Berenbaum, Dr. Kenneth Waltzer, David Klevan and Dr. Peter Cohen, will be presenting lectures in their areas of expertise. These will include talks on Jewish culture and history, the history of Holocaust, the mind of the perpetrator and resistance efforts. One highlight of the program will be the survivor testimony of Zev Weiss. In addition, ASU faculty members Drs. Brantz, Boyd and Horowitz will facilitate discussions on Elie Weisel’s Night, and Simon Wiesenthal’s Sunflower.
Along with the lectures, there will be teacher-oriented sessions. Teachers will learn how to use literature, film and survivor testimony in their classrooms, as well as learn about online resources for learning and teaching about the Holocaust. Lee Holder, a Holocaust educator from North Carolina, will be attendance all week to work with the participants. Linda Scher, another North Carolina educator, will be a guest lecturer at the symposium. Teachers who attend all 40 hours of the symposium will earn four CEUs.
ASU’s Center of Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies provides educational opportunities for students, teachers and community members. The mission of the Center is to strengthen tolerance, understanding and remembrance by increasing the knowledge of Jewish culture and history, teaching the history and meaning of the Holocaust and using these experiences to explore peaceful avenues for human improvement and the prevention of future genocides. The symposium is one means of fulfilling the Center’s mission.
