On Tuesday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m., the Avery County Habitat for Humanity will be hosting its annual fundraising dinner. The dinner, catered by the Daniel Boone Inn Restaurant, will take place in the gym at Crossnore First Baptist Church. Tickets are $15 for adults and $7 for children age 12 and under.
Tickets need to be purchased ahead of time in order for the Daniel Boone Inn to get a proper count of guests that it will be providing food for.
Avery County Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian organization that partners with people in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing hosts the dinner every year to help raise funds for the families they are contracted with.
So far this year they are contracted with five local families: Chasidie Hudson and her two daughters; Lynn and Angela Brown and their three children; Robert Lunsford and his two daughters; married couple Jerry White and Allecia Campbell; and the Gwyn family, whose house was recently the site for the Avery Habitat Women Build Day on May 7.
There are also three families with applications for homes pending who stand to benefit from this year’s dinner.
The families who apply and are accepted to the Habitat program are not simply given homes. They have to put in 500 hours of labor, referred to by Habitat for Humanity as “sweat equity.” Work on homes isn’t begun until the families do the first 100 hours of this labor working for the Avery Habitat for Humanity in some form.
Despite all this work on the part of the families, help from the community in the form of fundraisers such as the annual dinner is still necessary to keep the program going.
In the past, the annual dinner has hosted between 150 and 190 guests.
“This year we’re expecting 200 or more,” said Office and Programs Manager Melanie Burgin.
Besides dinner, there will be live music provided by local musicians to entertain the guests. There will also be a live auction hosted by Boyd McCloud of McCloud Masonry in Elk Park. McCloud has been traveling the High Country for the past two months gathering items from local businesses such as Tweetsie Railroad to be auctioned off.
“There’s almost always a gas grill too,” said Burgin.
If you can’t make it to this year’s event but still feel compelled to help out, Burgin says that you can sponsor one of Avery Habitat’s families who might not otherwise be able to go due to financial burdens. Sponsoring a family is equivalent to purchasing their tickets.
Tickets for this year’s dinner are available at the ReStore in Newland, through any Avery Habitat board or staff member or by calling 828-733-1909.
