Featuring a emotive trumpet rendition of Taps and a touching singing of “America the Beautiful,” second graders from Blowing Rock Elementary honored the nation’s veterans on Monday, May 25, during the Blowing Rock American Legion’s annual Memorial Day Ceremony. The ceremony is usually held at Memorial Park but rain pushed the event indoors this year to the Blowing Rock Elementary auditorium. The change of venue was a plus, though, as participants and attendees enjoyed better acoustics and a longer ceremony. During the event, retired U.S. Marine Col. Bill Parker (right, top picture) shared stories from World War II with a wide-eyed, attentive youth audience (bottom picture), while Ron Oberly (left, top picture) of the American Legion acted as master of ceremonies.
