Despite an 80 percent chance of rain, 87 motorcyclists took off from Hollar & Greene Produce in Boone on May 16 and enjoyed a two-hour ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway in honor of Kali Church, the 3-year-old Boone resident who passed away in 2008 from viral meningitis secondary to adenovirus.
The High Country chapter of the Christian Motorcyclist Association hosted the inaugural Kali Church Memorial Ride that raised more than $3,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. In addition to registration fees, organizers sold 150 t-shirts and 100 vest patches during the event and sold doughnuts for breakfast, and hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks for lunch to participants.
After the ride, participants enjoyed live music from Ivy Meadows.
Organizers are already making plans for the second annual event, scheduled for May 2010.
