The Forget-Me-Nots Play Free Classical Recital at Rosen Friday

Local Celtic fiddling trio The Forget-Me-Nots will show their versatility when the group performs a classical music recital this Friday, May 29, at Rosen Concert Hall. The recital is free.

Known throughout the High Country for their rousing renditions of traditional Celtic fiddle tunes, The Forget-Me-Nots will stretch their artistic legs this Friday, May 29, as they give a free classical violin recital at ASU’s Rosen Concert Hall at 7:00 p.m. The venue is located in ASU’s Broyhill Music Building.

The free recital is open to the public. A reception will follow the recital.

While most of their performances have featured the trio of girls playing together, fiddlers Willa Finck, Ledah Finck and Maura Shawn Scanlin will perform by themselves with accompaniment by pianists Laura Chu Stokes and Penny Zerbel. They will be performing pieces by Baroque, Romantic and Modern era composers including Bach, Barber, Bartok, Bruch, Massenet, Mozart, Schubert and Viotti.

According to Scanlin, all three girls have performed at classical recitals during the last few years.

“We started classical before we started Celtic music,” said Scanlin. “We’ve done quite a bit of performing with classical music as well. The biggest difference for us is that we don’t play together. We play some chamber music, but we’re not going to include that in our recital.”

Asked whether or not they prefer one style to another, Scanlin said that the group enjoys aspects of both.

“It’s a little more free-from than classical, but we all enjoy classical just as much as Celtic,” said Scanlin.

According to their website, The Forget-Me-Nots will have a new CD filled with traditional Celtic music out in the near future. The band will resume their group performances with a show for the Mountain Home Music series alongside Amantha Mill on Saturday, June 6, followed by a performance for the Valle Crucis Park’s Music in the Valle concert series on August 28.
