Women of Vision Luncheon, Silent Auction June 25

On Thursday, June 25, the Appalachian Women’s Fund (AWF) will hold its annual Women of Vision Luncheon and Silent Auction at the Blowing Rock Country Club. This day of celebration and recognition will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $50 per person and are now on sale.

The event will honor a local woman who inspires through her volunteer work with women and children. AWF President Patti Turner said, “This nominee is a natural fit for the award. There are so many women in our area that volunteer countless hours on behalf of women and children. I wish we could honor all of the nominees. We can’t wait to surprise her with this award and publicly thank her and honor her at the luncheon.”

This year’s silent auction theme is “Feel Like A Woman!” Auction co-coordinator Mary Barcellona said, “The items we have gathered are so much fun. Groups of women can go in together and bid on a girls’ getaway trip, or you can bid on an indulgence for yourself just because you’re worth it! There is something for everyone in every price range imaginable. Merchants have been very creative and especially generous in donating items for the auction.”

The 2008 Women of Vision luncheon raised more than $65,000, enabling the AWF to award grants to nine agencies in the counties of Watauga, Ashe, Avery, Yancey, Alleghany and Mitchell. All of the recipients serve women and children in areas of domestic abuse, higher education, hunger and poverty, healthcare and substance abuse.

“We would be thrilled to surpass last year’s total because the communities’ needs are so much greater now,” said Turner. “When the economy slows down, the nonprofit agencies always see a rise in the number of people seeking assistance.”

Turner wants women to come and have fun. “This event is a great way for us all to reconnect after a long winter, celebrate being a woman and share our strength and independence with women and children in need,” she said.
