Blowing Rock Stage Company Announces 2009 Theatre Outreach Program Summer CAMPservatories

Join the Blowing Rock Stage Company’s 8th year of summer camps taught by theatre professionals from across the country.
Every student enrolled will have the opportunity to attend a show performed and produced by the Blowing Rock Stage Company throughout the summer session at no extra charge.

The 2009 Theatre Outreach Program Summer CAMPservatories
IMPROVISATION KNOW HOW—Ages 14-18
Date: Monday to Friday, June 15 to 19
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
A stand-up-style, hands-on week with actors Tom Wahl and Beth Simpson, cast members of Shear Madness, a madcap comedy using improvisation at its root. Participants also get to see the show on Thursday, June 18. Tom has performed at the GeVa Theatre Center in Rochester, N.Y., the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and in regional houses across the country. Film credits include New in Town with Renee Zellweger and Ace Ventura with Jim Carrey. Beth has performed the role of Puck in Shakespeare in Hollywood and has performed extensively with Children’s Theatre of Charlotte.
PLAY PRODUCTION—Ages 8-9
Date: Monday to Friday, June 15 to 19
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
Students explore all areas of play production including characterization, costumes and props as they perform a short play chosen just for their age group. Chris Wright, who starred as Peter Pan in last summer’s Stage Company musical of the same name, leads the way.
SUMMER BUGzzzzzzzzz SHOW—Ages 4-5
Date: Monday to Friday, June 22 to 26
Time: Two half-day sessions: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $100
Look at summer bugs and create a story about mosquitoes, gnats, ladybugs, katydids and fireflies. Celebrate the beloved Eric Carle story “The Quiet Cricket.”
PLAY PRODUCTION—Ages 10-11
Date: Monday to Friday. June 29 to July 3
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
Students explore all areas of play production including characterization, costumes and props as they perform a short play chosen just for their age group. Taught by Chris Wright.
ENCHANTED FOREST—Ages 6-7
Date: Monday to Friday, July 6 to 10
Time: Two half-day sessions: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $100
You are invited to enter the magical world of a forest with its own talking trees, fairies, trolls and sprites. Become these characters and tell their stories about the spell they are under. Taught by Chris Wright (Peter Pan).
MUSICAL THEATRE MADNESS—Ages 11-18
Date: Monday to Friday, July 13 to 17
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
Dance, sing and explore the scenes of modern-day musicals. Chris Wright and Katie Deal Wright—director/choreographer from April’s High School Musical 2—lead the way. Spend a week with our professionals watching rehearsals of Bye Bye Birdie and composing your own musical showpiece.
TECHNICAL THEATRE—Ages 14-18
Date: Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
For students who wish to know more about the art and craft of designing costumes, lights, sound and sets. Spend a week with our professional staffers as you get behind the scenes for our production of Bye Bye Birdie.
CAMP GREEN SCREEN—Ages 11-13
Date: Monday to Friday, July 27 to 31
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Cost: $200
Learn how films such as Lord of the Rings and Twilight use green screen technology. Develop a character using words, props and costumes. Shoot your scene, and then see how it transforms into movie magic.
