At a setting heralded as a perfect mix of elevation, obstacles and natural beauty, the High County Disc Golf Club will host High Country Throwdown II on Saturday and Sunday, July 11 and 12. The event takes place at Ashe County Disc Golf Course, located in Ashe County Park in Jefferson, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday.

The field for the three-round (54-hole) tournament is limited to 90 players—up from 72 players in 2008—so Todd Patoprsty, coordinator of the event, is encouraging all interested participants to register early by clicking to www.DiscGolfU.com. Pre-registration ends Friday, July 3.

The cost to enter is $50 for pros in the open, masters and women divisions, and $25 for amateurs in the advanced men, advanced women, advanced masters, intermediate and juniors divisions. All fees include lunch on Saturday, and amateur fees include a free disc, t-shirt and trophies.

Sponsored by the High Country Disc Golf Club, Innova Disc Golf, Ashe County and the Professional Disc Golf Association, High Country Throwdown II is a sanctioned Professional Disc Golf Association b-tier event and begins with a players’ meeting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the first round. After breaking for lunch, players will take to the course for the second round. On Sunday, the third round begins at 10:00 a.m. and is followed by an awards ceremony.

On Friday, June 10, Patoprsty will host a doubles match at 5:00 p.m. For details, call Patoprsty at 336-649-0808.

Primitive camping at Ashe County Park is available for $5 per person, per night, and lodging is available at the host hotel, The Nations Inn, for $67 per night for two people. The cut-off date for lodging reservations is Tuesday, July 7.

To get to the Ashe County Disc Golf Course, take Highway 221 off Highway 421 to Wade Bare Road—about 2 miles east of Jefferson. Continue to the end of Wade Bare Road and turn left on North Main Street. After 0.5 miles on North Main Street, turn right onto Ashe Park Road and the park is on the left.
