Watauga Postpones Revaluation to 2012—Will Return to Four-Year Cycle After 2012
One month short of its third anniversary, the Appalachian Skatepark will close its doors next week at its location at the Watauga County Parks & Recreation Complex. On Monday, June 1, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to close the skatepark, ending a tumultuous two years that has seen the park go from unsupervised, to supervised by a security firm, to supervised by a community member and, finally, to facing closure after the Watauga County Parks & Recreation Commission voted 13-1 in March to cease operation of the park based on conduct and budget concerns.

Watauga Commissioners Close Appalachian Skatepark—Two Parties Step Forward Offering To Relocate Facility
Acknowledging the slumping real estate market at the local, state and national levels, the Watauga County Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 1, attempted to lessen the effects locally by unanimously adopting a resolution to postpone the scheduled 2010 property tax revaluation until January 1, 2012. The resolution will become official at the state level by the end of the week when the North Carolina Department of Revenue receives and accepts the resolution.

Hawksnest Resort Opening New Zipline at Seven Devils Facility—“Biggest on the East Coast”
If you happen to be in the vicinity of Hawksnest Snow Tubing Resort in Seven Devils and see people soaring through the air, don’t be alarmed. Later this month, the longtime recreation destination located between Boone and Banner Elk is opening its brand new zipline course that, when completed, will feature 13 different cables with more than two miles of riding for people ages five and up. According to co-owner Lenny Cottom, Hawksnest Zipline will “definitely be the biggest on the East Coast.”

25 Summers of Theatre—Lees-McRae Summer Theatre Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Three of Broadway’s most popular musicals are coming to the mountains as part of Lees-McRae Summer Theatre’s 25th anniversary season. The show-stopping lineup includes CATS, showing Wednesday through Sunday, June 17 to 21; The Secret Garden, showing Friday, July 3, through Thursday, July 16; and Guys and Dolls, showing Thursday through Monday, July 30 to August 3.
